Morning Player Notes (Jan 29)

It was a late scratch for Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere on Monday night, as the team originally cited a lower-body injury, as the reason for the offensive defenseman to miss the game against the Winnipeg Jets and it was later clarified to be a bruise of some sorts, not considered to be a major issue.  The team is apparently hopeful that he'll be able to dress for Thursday's game in Boston, already ruling him out of tonight's game in New York.  He's on the list as out day-to-day for now.

Gostisbehere has been okay for Scott's team this season, putting up 20 points in 48 games, ranking 2nd on his blueline in scoring.  Unfortunately, Scott's blueline as a whole hasn't been all that great, ranking 23rd with 64 points, the Flyers rearguard nearly one-third of those points.

2019 1st Round Draft Pick

We're still a few weeks away from the trade deadline, but the moving and shaking has already begun and on Monday night, we've seen one of the bigger deals this season, as the Toronto Maple Leafs moved to acquire defenseman Jake Muzzin from the Los Angeles Kings for a couple of former 2nd round picks and their 1st round pick in the upcoming draft.  A solid package for a defenseman with still another year on his deal after this one.

Muzzin has been a very reliable defenseman for the Kings over the last handful of years, really making his full-time mark back in the 2014 season and has been able to provide Los Angeles with three 40-point seasons in his time there and was keeping a reasonable pace for close to 35 points, something that could certainly be improved upon with the move to a more offensively capable Toronto team.

It does appear safe to say that the rebuild mode is now on in Los Angeles, despite having Ilya Kovalchuk on the books for another two seasons.  The futures that the Kings received in this deal would definitely be a strong signal to say that it's on now.  I would be looking to see what the Kings will also do with UFAs to come, Carl Hagelin and Nate Thompson, but they won't show up on the blog, since they're not pool worthy.

Muzzin is a pool guy, belonging to Neil's team this season and has been his best defenseman this year with his 21 points.  It's not a good year for defensemen for Neil.  This is actually a pretty good gain for his team, especially in the week of the Waiver Draft and his activation on the new team starts at the end of the week, a couple days before the new players go live from the Waiver Draft.  Neil's defense ranks last in the pool with 57 points this season, but could move up with these gains, Wilton's blueline is only 1 point better and ripe for the picking.

Goalie Announcements (Jan 28)

Welcome to Week Eighteen!  The Waiver Draft is in full flight, the numbers have been reset and looking at the schedule... well, it's still looking a bit light, thanks to all of those bye weeks, but we'll get through it just fine.

Unfortunately for some, the goalies that have been picked already in the Waiver Draft are not active until next week, so if you see any of them playing, you're only getting a teaser of what's to come.  On the bright side, at least it's still coming.

Only two games on the docket for this Monday night, a very limited draw, the first of four nights of limited games and then the weekend really picks up.  Let's see what we have on tap.

Laurent Brossoit (Picked) versus Carter Hart (Picked)
Speaking of selected goalies, both Benson and Jeremy will get to see starts from the goalies that they picked over the weekend tonight, as the Jets and Flyers faceoff.  No, these points will not count, but some advanced scouting could be done and you can keep your fingers and toes crossed that something terrible doesn't happen.  Both the Jets and the Flyers also play tomorrow night, starting back-to-backs in this really slow part of the schedule.

Keith Kinkaid (Neil) versus Matt Murray (Picked)
It looks like Neil gets the only active hockey pool goalie start of the night tonight, as Keith Kinkaid is set to take to the net for the New Jersey Devils, when they are into Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins.  Neil's team is the only one not to hit double-digits when it comes to goalie points in the second segment of the season, but a win tonight could turn that around, as his team starts at 8 points from the crease at this point.  At the other end, Scott will get to scout the top pick in the Week Eighteen Waiver Draft, but no, the points don't count.

Afternoon Player Notes (Jan 28)

The Boston Bruins have ruled out Tuukka Rask for Tuesday night's game at home to the Winnipeg Jets and in order to get a backup goalie into the fold, they have placed Rask on the Injured Reserve, retroactive to January 19th, which means that he is eligible to come back when he's ready to go.  Rask suffered a concussion just before the break and the team's bye week and All-Star break couldn't have come at a better time for him, limiting the amount of games/starts he could have missed.  The team has not issued any timetable for a return as of yet.

With the platoon situation in Boston, it's hard to say for sure whether or not Rask really misses a start on Tuesday, but if this concussion issue starts to stretch into multiple games, you know that he will technically be missing starts and Jesse's pool team can really ill afford to have that happen.  Jesse's team opens the week in 10th, 34 points out of the money.

The New York Rangers didn't have forward Mats Zuccarello at practice on Monday morning, as he is nursing an infection in his foot. The Rangers coaching staff didn't think that the problem was anything more than a short-term issue, but they have ruled him out of Tuesday night's game at home to the Flyers, but are optimistic that he could be ready for Thursday's game in New Jersey.  In 35 games this season, the Norwegian forward has 8 goals and 24 points.

It sounds like it will only be one game missed for John P., with the possibility of another, which isn't quite the way the week.  John's team opens play this week in 16th place, 56 points out of the money.

2019 4th Round Draft Pick

The Dallas Stars re-acquired defenseman Jamie Oleksiak from the Pittsburgh Penguins, sending a mid-round pick in next summer's draft in the other direction.  Oleksiak as been down in the bottom pairing of the Penguins blueline for a good part of the season and just hasn't had much traction with the team of late.

The Stars announced that Marc Methot was done for the year after season ending knee surgery, so they were looking to add some size back into their lineup, as they currently hold one of the Western Conference wild card spots and would like to make the playoffs this year.

The move to Dallas may increase the ice-time for Oleksiak, which would be a big gain for Brian's hockey pool team.  Brian picked up the big defender in the last Waiver Draft and has got very little from him, 1 assist in 13 games played in the second segment of the season.  Of course, there's a pretty good chance Brian drops the defenseman this week, but after the trade, he may or may not think twice.  Who is to say?

Brian's team needs the boost, sitting 15th, 48 points out of the money.

Noon Player Notes (Jan 28)

Taylor Hall still hasn't been practicing with the New Jersey Devils, unable to go for the team's first skate after the break on Sunday and he's not going to be in the lineup on Monday night against the Penguins either.  His lower-body injury has been lingering and it doesn't sound like it's getting any better any quicker.  He's already been out for a month and there is no timetable for a return as of yet.

I don't think you can see Mike dropping Hall for anyone this week, he's just too big of a fish not to wait for.  Mike's team sits 11th, 3 points out of the top 10 and could desperately use Hall back to make one last big push.

The Jets are out on the road, starting tonight in Philadelphia, but they are doing so without defenseman Dustin Byfuglien, who remains out with his lower-body injury. At the end of December, he was listed as week-to-week and things haven't really progressed for him and he isn't on this trip and it sounds doubtful that he'll play this week.

It's hard to believe that Dale C. would shed Byfuglien, there's probably no one out there that would score like him, even if he was to return in a few weeks.  It's just a handcuffing situation, more than anything.

It sounds like the New York Rangers will have Kevin Hayes back in their lineup tomorrow night, when they host the Flyers. Hayes has been out for the last month with an upper-body injury. Hayes is a top target for the trade deadline this year, given the Rangers lacklustre season, so it's good news for Wilton's team, who gets a boost of a body back here soon and possibly a trade to a more potent offense too.  Miles Wood could be returning from injury for the Devils tonight against the Penguins, he's been out for the last couple of weeks with a lower-body injury, but was seen on the ice for the morning skate today, which is a good indicator that he's close.  Good news for Ryan's team, as he wouldn't have to waste a drop and a pick on him.

Week Eighteen Waiver Draft (Jan 28)

The head start proved to be rather useful for the Waiver Draft, as we managed to get through 15 total selections in the opening round, possibly saving me three days of panic and worry, not to mention the "are we in the bonus round?" text messages on Wednesday.  I'm not saying we'll be in the bonus round by Wednesday, but could you imagine if we were?  We had five more picks on Sunday, which really rounded everything out and here's hoping we get off to a bright start on Monday, possibly even finishing round one?

Brian needed to take care of an injury situation in the crease, as it doesn't sound like Antti Raanta is returning to the Coyotes from a lower-body injury any time soon.  The selection to take Raanta's spot was decided on Pheonix Copley, who has been the capable backup to Braden Holtby in Washington this season.  Brian's goalies have been a bit of a let down this year, ranking 19th with 45 points.

Next up was Wilton's team, who had a season-ending injury to dispatch of, as Ondrej Kase of the Anaheim Ducks was shut down for the season after shoulder surgery was said to be needed to repair a torn labrum.  That made the decision to drop him fairly straight-forward and in his place, Wilton managed to snag Paul Stastny of the Vegas Golden Knights, who was dropped because of injury in Week Nine.  This could turn out to be a decent pick for him.

Tony was eyeing up an upgrade at the forward position with his pick, as Ryan Strome just wasn't doing it for his team, even after the move to the Big Apple this season in the trade between Edmonton and New York.  Florida Panthers forward Frank Vatrano was eyed up by a couple of teams before Tony's team, but it wasn't until the 13th pick in the draft before the trigger was pulled on him.

Another Week Nine selection got the chop with the 14th swap in the Waiver Draft, as Dale C. parted ways with Dallas' Jason Spezza, who had only posted 6 points in the last eight weeks of the season, which ranks 36th among all the players taken in Week Nine.  Dale is hoping for a vast improvement by taking Nashville's Nick Bonino for the stretch run, a forward on a playoff-bound team couldn't hurt.

The last pick of the head start went to Mike's team and he also dropped a Week Nine selection that under-performed in the last eight weeks, Devin Shore of the Anaheim Ducks.  Shore was dealt to the Ducks from the Stars in the second segment, but couldn't really find his scoring touch, picking up 5 points in the last eight weeks.  Mike replaced him with Artturi Lehkonen of the Canadiens, who has been an everyday guy in Montreal this year.

So, now we're onto the regularly scheduled portion of the Waiver Draft, 15 picks ahead of where we could have been.  Jesse leads off the proceedings today and hopefully, if all goes well, we could be through the opening round by the end of the day.  Wouldn't that be something?

Week Eighteen Waiver Draft (Jan 27)

The head start got a few more picks on Saturday, as we slowly chug along to the start of Week Eighteen tomorrow.  We're now up to 10 drops and picks made already, which isn't too bad.  We'll hopefully see a few more on Sunday, but for now, we'll go over the next five that we saw.

Eric kicked everything off on Saturday with the drop of a regular healthy scratch in Joakim Ryan in San Jose, picking up Nate Schmidt in Vegas to help him out.  Eric's defense has had a rough second segment of the season, ranking 17th in scoring since the start of Week Ten, so this acquisition will look to improve upon that.

Goaltending was a popular position to fill on Saturday and Neil kicked it off with the pick up of Darcy Kuemper of the Coyotes, who is getting a good portion of the starts in Arizona, dropping a failed gamble in Tristan Jarry in Pittsburgh, who has spent the better part of the segment in the minors.

Jeremy also needed a swap in goal, moving one Philadelphia goalie for another, dropping Brian Elliott and picking up the rookie Carter Hart.  Jeremy's team hasn't featured in the rookie pool this year, but it will starting in Week Nineteen, but it starts 64 points back of 1st place and Hart might not be enough to get the job done for his side.

A hand injury in December saw Alex Pietrangelo of the Blues get the drop in Week Nine, but he makes his glorious return to the hockey pool in Week Eighteen, thanks to Stacey C. and his need for more scoring from the blueline.  Marco Scandella of the Sabres just wasn't doing it for his team and the upgrade will certainly help.  Stacey's defense has 35 points in the second segment, good enough for 14th, but it got a whole lot better with this pick.

Finally, John P. has had even less luck at the defense position in the last eight weeks, ranking 24th with 25 points from the blueline, so he made the move to drop rookie defenseman Maxime Lajoie of the Senators and he picked up Michal Kempny of the Capitals.  In terms of rookies, John's team is at 32 points, 32 points back of the lead and has now divested another rookie from this lineup, so he might be calling uncle on that mini-game now.

That leaves us with Brian's pick down under.  He has been notified this morning, so I would expect to see something from him this afternoon and then we can continue on.  Once Monday hits, the 24-hour rule will then apply and we'll be in full drafting mode.

2019 All-Star Mini Game

It was definitely another successful All-Star weekend, as the NHL and their best players really put on a good show, between the Skills Competition on Friday night and the 3-on-3 tournament on Saturday night.  It's certainly a showcase of skill and speed and there was more than enough for everyone in San Jose.

In the tournament, the Central Division finally got the best of the Pacific in the opener, stomping them 10-4.  The Colorado connection of Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog were everywhere and putting numbers up in the first half, cruising to victory.

The Eastern Conference match-up was much better, as it was a close game for the better part of the time, but the Metropolitan Division really poured it on in the 2nd half, scoring four unanswered goals and taking the game 7-4 in the end.  Sidney Crosby of the Penguins and Seth Jones of the Blue Jackets were definite standouts in that game.

It all led up to the final, between the Central and Metropolitan Divisions and it was Crosby again, taking the lime light, as he led the Eastern squad to a 10-5 victory, thanks to 2 goals and 3 assists in the game, earning MVP honours at the tournament and taking top spot in the scoring ranks for the night as well, finishing with 4 goals and 4 assists in the two games.

Crosby's effort wasn't quite enough for the mini-game victory for Eric though.  The 8 points was good, but since Crosby was his only representation for the weekend, it fell short to both Clayton and Stuart, who each had five games played between the three games and they both came away with 5 goals and 9 points from their players.  If this was a paid mini-game, it would be considered a tie, since they were even on goals, no wins and points.

More importantly though, it was a good break, entertainment was had and now we can concentrate on the stretch run to the playoffs.

Week Eighteen Waiver Draft (Jan 26)

It may not have been the head start I was necessarily hoping for, but a head start is a head start.  Thanks to the All-Star break, we've had the chance to get an early jump on next week's Waiver Draft, hoping to conclude it in good time and have an extended bonus round, if needed.  On Friday, we knocked off a handful of drops and picks, so we'll have a look at those and prepare for a few more drops and picks, if all goes well today.

I didn't think Scott was going to pass up on the chance to get Matt Murray, the best player available in this player swap.  I'm sure he doesn't want to finish in last place this season, so taking the best player available was a pretty solid move on his part.  He dropped Cam Ward of the Blackhawks to pick him up, who could be seen as a reasonable pickup in the next round, one might think.

Brenda & Seward's team is also not looking to stay near the bottom for very much longer, picking up Vincent Trocheck of the Panthers, who was dropped because of injury in the Week Nine Waiver Draft.  The duo are looking to improve upon a dud of a pickup last time around in Jason Pominville of the Sabres, who dropped off the map in Week Ten.

The rookie pool gets a little more interesting when Derek B. drops Jonathan Quick of the Kings to pick up Adin Hill of the Coyotes.  Hill has been platooning with Darcy Kuemper, but the overall points isn't what Derek is after... he just wants his money back.  Will it be enough though?

Chelsea's team was also looking to the forward ranks for some more help, letting the injured Montreal grinder Andrew Shaw go and picking up the much-coveted Micheal Ferland of the Hurricanes.  Ferland is among those players who will likely move at the trade deadline and head to a contender, which certainly gives him plenty of potential for the stretch run.

And finally, the last pick of the day was done by Benson, who wanted an upgrade in the crease, letting go of the other Chicago Blackhawks goalie in the pool, Corey Crawford, and picking up the backup in Winnipeg, Laurent Brossoit, who is putting up stellar numbers in limited action.

That's as far as we've come, we're now waiting on Eric to make his move, if any.  There is no deadline in the head start, but if Eric goes all the way into Monday, then we'll have ourselves an issue.

Morning Player Notes (Jan 25)

On Thursday, the Anaheim Ducks did some roster shuffling for salary cap purposes, as we head to the break.  All of these days that we are in the All-Star break, do count against the cap, so a lot of teams dropped their rosters down to the minimum, trying to maximize what they can spend down the stretch.  The Ducks were no different, assigning a handful of players to the AHL, bringing up some cheaper alternatives that don't need to clear waivers to go back down and activating Jakob Silfverberg from the IR, since he counts against the cap anyways.

There was no actual confirmation that Silfverberg was cleared to resume play, when the schedule restarts next week, so this will be an interesting one to watch.  He was on the injured list with a lower-body injury, already missing four games, but is he ready to go or was this a paper transaction?

I'm sure Benson is hoping that Silfverberg is ready to go when play resumes.  Sure, his team sits 21st in the overall standings, but his team is in the hunt for the game-winning goals money and when on track, Silfverberg scores goals.  He would be super-handy down the stretch.

Ducks' Kase Done For the Season

On Wednesday, the Anaheim Ducks provided an update to injured forward Ondrej Kase, saying that he will require surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder and that his recovery will be in the 5-to-6 months range.  With that being said, that effectively ends his regular season, but if the Ducks were somehow going to make it deep into the playoffs, I suppose there is a chance that he could return to action before the summer.

The focus though is the regular season, which now finishes at 11 goals and 20 points in 30 games this season and heading into the All-Star break, he was ranked 265th overall in scoring.  Of course, that will fall dramatically with still another third of the season to go, but it was a pretty good push, even if it was diminished by injury.

In terms of timing for the hockey pool, it makes the decision really easy for Wilton's team to drop him and recruit some new talent for the last third of the season.  With the Waiver Draft order now set, Wilton will pick 12th and 37th in the opening two rounds of the Waiver Draft and given that this is an injury situation, Wilton could take advantage of the bonus round here, if he had other players on the chopping block.

Wilton's team will open Week Eighteen in 14th place, 47 points out of the money and still a week away from any such roster changes going live.  He'll have to sit with Kase for one more week.

Week Seventeen Newsletter

It's a very early edition of the Newsletter this week, since we're heading into the All-Star break, we might as well get the job done right away and shoot right into the Week Eighteen Waiver Draft.  There's nothing finer than a solid head start, if one can get it.  First, we'll go over the short week that was, which probably won't make for a very long Newsletter.

5 points was the best total of the week and it was a 4-way tie for top spot, so we had to get deep into the tie-breaking process to get there. T.J. Oshie of the Capitals and Joe Pavelski had 1 goal, Eric Staal had 3 goals, but as you can see, it was Alex Ovechkin of the Capitals taking top spot, finishing with 4 goals out of his 5 points.

Ovechkin posted a hat-trick and an assist against the Sharks on Tuesday and then another goal against the Maple Leafs on Wednesday night, taking the tie-breaker without much fuss in the shortened week.

This week brings his totals up to 37 goals and 57 points in 50 games this season, which is good enough for 15th overall in the hockey pool scoring ranks.  Ovechkin was selected by the fans to be the captain of the Metropolitan Division, but has since backed out to rest and he will miss the team's next game after the break, Friday, February 1st against the Flames.

Jesse is getting a good return for the 19th overall selection in the draft this year, since Ovechkin is four spots ahead of his pick selection.

There was another tie-breaker to be had in the Newsletter in this shortened week, as the Mover & Shaker was a sprint to the finish and there were a number of teams that were vying for it and only two teams came in for the photo finish, both Dale C. and Neil each topped the pool with 14 points in Week Seventeen, but the results of the snap at the line showed Neil edging out Dale by a 4-3 margin in the goal scoring department, which means Neil is our Mover & Shaker of the week.

The Mover & Shaker nod didn't really hurt Neil's team when it comes to the Waiver Draft, his team didn't move up any in the standings, remaining at 19th position, but now his team is only 2 points back of 18th and is also poised to make up some ground, when he is able to drop some players in the next 11 days.

However, this week, it was led by Carolina's Teuvo Teravainen, who had 4 points in his pair of games this week, the young Finn is really coming along down there.  Also having a good week for Neil's team were Aleksander Barkov of the Panthers and Charlie Coyle of the Wild, each posting 3 points as well.

Neil's team has a couple of easy drops to make, one due to injury and the other in the minors, so his team will have some options out there, when it comes to his turn.  Being in 19th place, 65 points out of the money, it might be high time to do a little bit of research to see if there are any gains he can make in a mini-game to get his money back.  Can he somehow find 15 more game-winning goals in the available players that are left?

The light schedule was also going to wreak some havoc on the standings, because some pool teams were destined to be heavy on certain divisions or just have some horrible, horrible luck.  Chelsea's team felt that bad luck.  Her team did have a number of opportunities for points, two goalie starts, nine skater games, but only 1 point to show for it all.  Just a truly disappointing result.

Jeff Petry of the Canadiens was her only saving grace, saving her team from no points with a single assist in last night's game against the Coyotes.

On the plus side, her pick did improve by one slot for the Waiver Draft, as her team lost a spot in the standings.  Her team will now pick 4th and will possibly go fishing for some more game-winning goals as well.

Even though there wasn't a lot of action this week, there was some movement in the top three teams in Week Seventeen, as Grant's team leapfrogged over Stacey M. for 2nd place, giving up that crucial selection spot in the Waiver Draft, which I mock drafted him to pass on both picks anyways.  Grant's team now has a small 2-point buffer over Stacey's team, but more importantly, made up some ground on Stuart's team in the week, now back by 22 points.

Kristy & Don and Wes round out the top five, still within striking range of the top three, as we head into the break.  The duo are only 3 points back, while Wes is 6 points back of 3rd place.

Not a lot doing in the rookie pool this week, but Ryan's team found another 2 points from David Rittich of the Flames, picking up a win this week.  Clayton's team picked up the only other point this week, extending his lead to 11 points and he may be shopping for a little more help to defend against Ryan's team and Derek B.'s team this coming week.

The shootout was employed in this shortened week and the pool did collect a couple of goals once again, four straight weeks with 2 shootout goals.  Incredible.  Jesse's team moved up into a tie for 5th at 5 shootout goals, while Stuart's team only scored it's 2nd goal in the shootout this season this week, one stat his team isn't particularly strong in.

The lead remains at 6 goals, shared by the same four teams... Jeremy, Mike, Grant and John P..

The pool picked up 9 game-winners out of the 15 games that were on the schedule this week, which is a pretty nice return for us.  Grant's team was best in the limited schedule, picking up a pair of winners, bringing his total up to 18 on the season, good enough for a tie for 15th.

Stuart continues to lead here by 10 winners, with 35 tallies, not picking up any this week, leading Dale C. by that large margin, while we're up to five teams that are at 24 winners, a couple new teams joining the fray there.

Clayton's team was the goon team of the week, somehow finding 20 minutes in penalties in only three days worth of action.  That brings his total up to  259 minutes this season, 12th in the pool in that regard.

Stuart's lead for goonmanship is now shrinking, as it is now down to only 14 minutes ahead of Ryan's team, which made up a little more ground in Week Seventeen.  If Ryan's team wasn't in 9th place, I'd probably say... goon it up!

The goalie survivor pool ended weeks ago, but I thought it was worth noting that the streak of wins in weeks has now stopped for Troy, as his team wasn't able to pick anything up in the All-Star shortened week, the streak finishing at 16 weeks.

The reason for the whole break is the All-Star game and we'll have plenty of coverage of the game this weekend.  The skills competition is now Friday night and the 3-on-3 tourney is on Saturday night, so grab your popcorn and get ready.  It should be a fun one once again.

There are still a couple of injury concerns, which may shift some of the rosters around a little bit more and we'll have more on that, as those news bytes develop.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

The rush to the break actually brought us some decent scoring numbers in Week Seventeen, as the pool averaged 13.7 points a game in the 15 games played in the week.  That was our best number since Week Eleven, when we saw 14.55 points per game.  Here's hoping that Week Nineteen will return to a form like that, when the Waiver Draft players becoming active.
