2014 Draft Class Signings (July 12)

The first of the 2014 1st round draft picks was signed on Friday, as the Pittsburgh Penguins put ink to paper with Finnish forward Kasperi Kapanen. Kapanen was taken 22nd overall by the Penguins a couple of weeks ago and may be ready to take on an NHL role as soon as next season.  The 17-year old has already been playing with the men in Finland and by training camp, he will have turned 18, so he should be more than ready to go, in theory.

The second player to sign from the 2014 1st round draft class was the 2nd overall pick, Sam Reinhart, who signed with the Buffalo Sabres, likely in line for the rookie maximum this season.  Reinhart was among the upper echelon of players that could have been taken with the 1st overall pick, but the Panthers didn't elect to take him, leaving him to the Sabres and still made him into a quality pick.  There is also some belief that Reinhart was pretty close to being NHL-ready at the draft and he will get a long look at camp, for sure.  The Sabres already have 13 forwards on their projected roster, so there may need to be some bumping off here soon.
