After Sunday night's games, all pool teams will now show their points and how many players they have remaing. Teams are starting to get eliminated now, so it's best if you know that you have more (or less) players than your rivals.
Well, there's only one sweep in the first round and it's the New Jersey Devils taking the broom to the New York Rangers after a 4-2 win. Martin Brodeur picked up his 10th point in the win for the Devils making 31 saves. Brian Gionta's shorthanded marker early in the third counted as the winning goal for the Devils, so he finished with two points in the clincher. Patrik Elias scored two and added an assist for three points and Scott Gomez had a goal and an assist as well for the Devils. The Devils may have quite a while to wait to see who they are going to play against in the second round.
For the Rangers today, Steve Rucchin's late third period goal was the only point for the Rangers today. Jaromir Jagr left the game after his first shift after apparently aggrevating his shoulder injury that he picked up in the first game. Combined for the series, the Rangers scored a total of 5 points for the pool.
The eliminated players with points are as follows:
Peter Prucha, 1G
Steve Rucchin, 1G
Jaromir Jagr, 1A
Marek Malik, 1A
Michael Nylander, 1A
The champions have been knocked off! Ray Emery, the first rookie goaltender to win a series since Brian Boucher in 2000, took all four games himself and added an assist in the process to defeat the Lightning in five games. Wade Redden and Dany Heatley each had 2 assists last night, while Peter Schaefer, Andrej Meszaros and Martin Havlat scored for the Sens. Havlat, a non-pool pick, eventually got the winner in the 3-2 decision.
For the Lightning, the lack of picks as a whole was a decent indication that no one had any faith that the champs would do anything again. They weren't really much of a team, I thought, anyways. In the last game of the series, Brad Richards scored a goal and Cory Sarich, Vincent Lecavalier and Dan Boyle all had assists. At least for the Lightning, they actually scored some goals in their series, so a few of the picks actually generated some points for the five games that they were in.
The eliminated players with points are as follows:
Brad Richards, 3G 5A
Martin St. Louis, 4G 1GWG
Dan Boyle, 1G 3A
Vincent Lecavalier, 1G 3A
Pavel Kubina, 1G 1A
Vaclav Prospal, 2A
John Grahame, 1W
Daryl Sydor, 1A
Cory Sarich, 1A
The Edmonton Oilers went into Detroit and stole a game from the Red Wings to take a 3-2 lead in the series Saturday afternoon. Chris Pronger had 3 assists and Dwayne Roloson had the win, as the only two multi-point players in the game. The Oilers will now go home to try and finish the Red Wings off on Monday night. An Oilers series win would be devasting for most pool teams as more often than not, there are teams with at least a pair of Red Wings on their teams and not a lot of Oilers picked.
The Red Wings got goals from Brendan Shanahan and Henrik Zetterberg with assists coming from Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Holmstrom.
To put the devasatation in perspective, the most popular Red Wings, Nicklas Lidstrom and Brendan Shanahan were picked 23 (out of 39) times in the pool... while the most popular Oiler, Sergei Samsonov, was picked only 3 times.
The Flames decided to outclass the Ducks last night in their 3-2 win in Calgary Saturday night. A flat-footed Anaheim team just couldn't muster any offense until late in the final frame when there were a couple powerplay goals scored. Miikka Kiprusoff made 26 saves in the game last night with his shutout being broken halfway through the third. For Kipper, that his 3rd win of the playoffs. Jarome Iginla scored two goals, including the winner, Tony Amonte scored the other Flames goal, Daymond Langkow had 2 assists and Matthew Lombardi, Kristian Huselius & Roman Hamrlik all had assists as well.
For the Ducks, Rob Niedermayer scored the only pool-counting goal and Teemu Selanne had the only pool-counting assist in the game.
Game 6 will go at the pond in Anaheim on Monday, where the Flames will have the chance to eliminate the Ducks once and for all.

If you picked some Dallas Stars, you were hoping for a Game 5. Marty Turco made 22 saves in Dallas' 4-1 win against the Avalanche on Friday night to pull one game back and ensure that they played one more in Dallas. Sergei Zubov had 3 assists in the win and Jere Lehtinen had a goal and an assist to count for the pool as well. The Colorado goal didn't count any points in the pool, much to the chagrin of those Avalanche supporters.
The eye of the storm hit the Bell Centre and there was nothing calm about it. Cam Ward's 23 saves was enough to earn the 'Canes a win on Friday night. Ward has seemingly replaced Martin Gerber in net for Carolina, which hurts the 6 teams who had picked Gerber instead of another East goalie who is actually getting points. Justin Williams had a goal and an assist to be the top scoring Cane forward against Montreal. Aaron Ward potted his first of the post-season, while Eric Staal, Doug Weight, Cory Stillman and Mark Recchi all had assists as well. There was only one counter goal for the Habs and it was Sheldon Souray's 2nd of the post-season from Alexei Kovalev and Mike Ribeiro. Rod Brind'Amour scored the winner, so no bonus point there.
Peter Forsberg gained a share of the pool lead in points last night as he scored a pair of goals (including the winner) and added an assist as the Flyers squeaked by the Sabres 5-4. Robert Esche won his second game of the series as the Flyers have tied it back up at 2 games a piece going into the weekend. Eric Desjardins had a goal and an assist and Joni Pitkanen had 2 assists for the Flyers as well. Daniel Briere had 2 goals, Ales Kotalikhad 2 assists and Chris Drury had an assist for the Sabres in the loss.
Game 5 goes Sunday in Buffalo.

Vesa Toskala won his third game of the series and Patrick Marleau had his third career post-season hat-trick (including the winner) last night as the Sharks took a 3-1 series lead last night in a 5-4 win. Joe Thornton, Tom Preissing & Christian Ehrhoff each had assists for the Sharks in the win. Paul Kariya had a goal and an assist for the Predators. Mike Sillinger had a goal, Steve Sullivan, Kimmo Timonen, David Legwand and Dan Hamhuis all had assists as well. Both teams will head back to Nashville for a Sunday evening game.
Dany Heatley had the winning goal and two assists as the Senators beat the defending champs 5-2 on Thursday night. Ray Emery won his third game and Jason Spezza had a goal and an assist to help guide the way for the Eastern Conference leaders. Brad Richards had a goal and an assist for the Lightning in the loss.
The Senators will look to clinch the series on Saturday night in Ottawa, which is the middle game of the HNIC tripleheader.
Sean O'Donnell scored the overtime winner for the Ducks as they tied up the series at two games a piece last night. J-S Giguere won his second game of the post-season for the Ducks, while Teemu Selanne & Ryan Getzlaf each had their first goals of the playoffs. Jarome Iginla had a pair of goals in the loss for the Flames.
The series switches back to the Saddledome as the late game on Saturday night. Quack!
Finally, Manny Legace made 24 saves for the Red Wings as they powered past the Oilers in the third period to tie the series up at two. Mathieu Schneider had 3 assists for the Wings and Nicklas Lidstrom scored the eventual winner. Pavel Datsyuk had his first 2 assists of the series last night as well. Jaroslav Spacek scored the only pool counter for the Oilers as assists came from Shawn Horcoff, Ales Hemsky & Sergei Samsonov.
The Red Wings will host the Oilers as the first game on Saturday, kicking off at 1pm our time.
Tonight, Dallas can be the first team eliminated in the Stanley Cup Playoffs if they lose to Colorado in Denver tonight. There were a lot of Stars picked in the pool this year, thinking that they'd go a long ways. Jason Arnott, Janne Niinimaa and Niko Kapanen figured on at least 10 of the playoff pool sheets this year... Arnott being on 16, as the most popular Dallas Star.

TUESDAY NIGHT
Goals... you gotta love 'em! The Ottawa Senators stomped the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night 8-4 to go up in the series 2-1. Ray Emery stopped 35 shots for the win, Jason Spezza had 4 assists, Wade Redden had a goal and 2 assists and Dany Heatley had a goal and an assist. After 3 games, Spezza now leads the pool in points, to the glee of 12 teams who picked him up. For Tampa, Pavel Kubina had a goal and an assist and Martin St. Louis added a goal. Antoine Vermette scored Ottawa's 5th goal, so there was no bonus point awarded in the pool.
Quite the spirited affair, eh?? Anyone else catch Chara teach Lecavalier a lesson??? Ha ha ha!
The Ducks played host to the Flames in Anaheim on Tuesday night and the game was pretty tight until Darren McCarty and Robyn Regehr scored 34 seconds apart to ice the game for the Flames. Regehr added an assist as well in the game to help Miikka Kiprusoff earn his second win of the playoffs. Chuck Kobasew scored the winning goal late in the 2nd period to earn him a bonus point last night. The big scorer for the team though on Tuesday was Kristian Huselius, who had a goal and two assists. Scott Niedermayer was the big duck getting two assists in the loss.
It took another double-overtime to settle, but the Oilers have taken a 2-1 series lead in Edmonton over the Red Wings. Despite Henrik Zetterberg's two goal effort and Mathieu Schneider's goal and an assist, the Wings fell to Jarret Stoll's overtime winner, 8:44 in the second overtime frame. Shawn Horcoff recorded 3 assists, Ryan Smyth had a goal and an assist and Dwayne Roloson earned the win for his 44 save effort.
Steve Yzerman left last night's game with a sore back. 7 teams in the pool are now a bit concerned.
The San Jose Sharks brought the Predators home to show them what a little home-cooking can do and ushered them through a 4-1 win on Tuesday. Christian Ehrhoff had 3 assists (which 2 teams registerd), Tom Preissing had 2 assists (for 4 teams), Patrick Marleau had 2 goals (for 7 teams) and Vesa Toskala recorded points 5 & 6 with the win (for no teams). Steve Bernier had the winner for San Jose, so no bonus point was awarded. Kimmo Timonen recorded the only Predator point in the evening.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT
Jaromir Jagr's return couldn't have been any less of a help to the Rangers hopes of continuing on in the playoffs. Jagr registered nothing, while Martin Brodeur claimed his 31st career post-season shutout (2 behind Patrick Roy all-time... go Marty!). If the scoring sheet to the game is any indication, it looked like a pretty lacklustre game. Jamie Langenbrunner scored the winner for the bonus point and added an assist on Wednesday. Patrik Elias also had a goal and an assist in the 3-0 win for the Devils, who now lead the series 3-0.
The Rangers hopes are dwindling fast as are teams with Rangers on their squad. In the three games thus far in the series, the 12 Rangers in the pool have a combined total of 4 points.
The Carolina Hurricanes have some more life in them after Eric Staal delivered the OT winner against Montreal on Wednesday night. The 'Canes tied the game up on a Rod Brind'Amour goal halfway through the third to send it to overtime. Cam Ward picked up his first post-season win in his first career start, while Bret Hedican had two assists for the 'Canes in the victory. Michael Ryder & Sheldon Souray both had assists on Richard Zednik's goal in the second period.
The biggest cause for concern though is the loss of Saku Koivu who got caught near the eye with a Justin Williams stick. There is no real indication of how bad the injury actually is, but he was taken to hospital for pre-cautionary measures. There is only one team who picked Koivu, Les Mascouches, who will probably be most concerned in the pool. For Hurricane supporters in the pool, the winds of change may have been blown through the series as 'you can't let the Hurricanes taste the victory,' as per Don Cherry's wise words after the game.
Peter Forsberg had a pair of goals (including the winner) and an assist to put the Flyers back in the series against the Sabres in Game 3. Robert Esche got the win for Philly last night and Simon Gagne had a goal and an assist as well. Derian Hatcher also was able to pick up his 2nd assist in the series as the only other pool point for the Flyers last night. Ales Kotalik scored the only pool worthy goal and Maxim Afinogenov had his first 2 assists of the playoffs last night as well.
The series will go at least five games now that the Flyers have made the series 2-1 for Buffalo and Game 4 will go on Friday night in Philly. J.P. Dumont was knocked out of the game with a rib injury after Denis Gauthier sticked him in the mid-section late in the 2nd period. Dumont, a pick of 3 teams, will hear today what his condition is for Game 4.
The good ship Dallas is sinking. The Stars just can't find a way to beat Jose Theodore and the Avalanche in this first round of the playoffs. Theodore recorded his third win of the playoffs making 19 saves in the effort. Alex Tanguay was the bonus point collector with the OT winner and he added another goal and assist for a big 4-point night. Joe Sakic had a goal and an assist and Andrew Brunette had a goal as well for the Avalanche as they've stormed to a 3-0 series lead. The Stars actually scored three goals in the loss, but Sergei Zubov had the only pool counter, while Brendan Morrow had a pair of assists and Jussi Jokinen & Mike Modano each counted an assist for themselves.
Game 4 goes on Friday where Marty Turco will try and stave off elmination in the Dallas net.

Tonight's edition of the standings comes with some team rosters down below. Throughout the playoffs, teams will be posted so you can see who the leaders have and when they're done being posted, who all the teams below them have. Seems fair. On the right hand side of the page, there will be a link to each team that is posted, so you can have easy access to the team's your own team is up against at the moment and see when teams get eliminated from the playoffs.
Cristobel Huet withstood a comeback, being down a goal and double overtime to gain his third and fourth points of the playoffs with the 6-5 win over the Hurricanes. Michael Ryder was the overtime hero, scoring two, including the winner. This was a marquee game which saw 11 goals, a playoff pool delight. Alexei Kovalev had a goal and an assist to lead that playoff series in points with 5. Eric Staal recorded 4 assists in the game tonight in the losing cause. The Canadiens blew a 3-goal lead in the second period, only to get the lead back at 5-4, before Cory Stillman sent it into overtime. A great game indeed. The Canadiens go home with a series lead of 2-0, where they are very good at home this season, going 24-13-4. Could it be an early exit for an Eastern favourite?
There were some people who thought this series would be close. None of those were in the Sabres dressing room. In another goal-fest, the Sabres walked over the Flyers 8-2, scoring one less goal than the game above. Both J.P. Dumont and Jason Pominville recorded hat tricks, while Ryan Miller earned his second win of the series. The Flyers, with so much firepower, haven't been able to outscore the Sabres in the first two games at all. Simon Gagne and Petr Nedved were the only Flyers to register goals tonight. Ales Kotalik scored the eventual winning goal for the Sabres mid-way through the 1st period for the bonus point. The Flyers are well on their way to an early exit in this season's playoffs.
The Jagr-less, Rucinsky-less, Kasparitis-less Rangers walked into the Continental Airlines Arena hoping that their depth players could pull one out of the bag against the Devils. Martin Brodeur had other plans. Brodeur made 25 saves for his second win of the playoffs and the most popular goalie in the East is showing why he is just that. John Madden recorded a hat-trick tonight against the blue shirts, while Paul Martin had 2 assists, Jamie Langenbrunner & Brian Rafalski each had one. The Devils walked away with a 4-1 win and a 2-0 lead heading to Madison Square Gardens on Wednesday.
In what looked like a series that was gonna end quickly, the Stars got some life and made it into their game at home. The Avalanche scored 3 goals in the first period (Rob Blake, Andrew Brunette & Milan Hejduk) to be up by that margin at the first intermission. All woe was Dallas, in the eyes of more than likely a lot of people. But wait! The second period brought a whole new Stars team to the ice. Jussi Jokinen scored early. Jere Lehtinen scored two in 3 minutes and 19 seconds. Mike Modano scored with 3 seconds left in the second and all of a sudden the Stars were up a goal. Watching the third period online, it looked like the Stars might just hang on... but no... more drama! Defenseman Brett Clark scored with 2:04 remaining in regulation to send it into overtime. It only took 4:36 to solve the dispute in the end with Joe Sakic scoring the overtime winner, getting the bonus point, giving Jose Theodore the win and the Avalanche a 2-0 series lead going into Denver on Wednesday.
