Olympic Knee Injury Ends Tavares' Season

A horrible blow to the New York Islanders season, dealt to them from the 2014 Sochi Olympics, as their best player, John Tavares, suffered a serious knee injury.

On Thursday, the Canadian hockey club announced that the scoring forward had suffered some ligament damage and a torn meniscus and he is now expected to be out for the remainder of the regular season.

Tavares will start the post-Olympic home stretch in 4th place in pool scoring, finishing his season with 66 points (24 goals & 42 assists) in 59 games for Long Island.  Of course, that won't last, much to the chagrin (or the unadulterated hate) of the Islanders management and ownership group.

ImplicationsThis is a pretty big disappointment for Derek Wyllie, not so much that he had a real shot for the money, but a real shot for the top half of the standings and now his best player has been removed for the remainder of the year.

Wyllie was 30 points out of 12th place and he now has the least amount of projected games to be played, as Tavares has been confirmed as done for the year.

Tavares accounted for 16.2% of Wyllie's points to this point in the year, leaving Patrick Sharp as his best healthy player on his roster (14.3%).
