Finally! Some news we can use. The Sharks have re-signed restricted forward, Ryane Clowe, to a new 1-year deal (financial terms not disclosed). This deal had been rumoured to have happened a week or more ago, but the Sharks finally had the release on their website today.
Clowe only managed to play 15 games in the regular season for the Sharks, scoring 3 goals and adding 5 assists, but he really came out of obscurity in the playoffs, scoring 5 goals and 4 assists in only 13 games.
Clowe is still one of those players that you will have to use your keen hockey pool sense to decide where he fits into your hockey pool draft list. His career high in games is only 58, where he did have 16 goals and 18 assists. Subject to already renting the injury-prone tag, Clowe could be a positive player for your hockey pool team, especially if you can arrange getting him in a sleeper position.
Of course, his lack of full-time playing has obviously cost Clowe a long-term deal, so he'll likely be poised and ready to prove to Sharks management that he'll be worth three or more years on a contract or else some other team will likely make that move, as he should be available through unrestricted free agency next summer.
The Sharks now have 20 players under contract, including Clowe, and haven't too much space left after Clowe's signing. Before the signing, the Sharks only had $2.2 million left underneath, but they are also subject to many trade rumours that could send high price players out to fit in some more character guys.
