Wings Re-Sign Downey

The Red Wings continue to do a little bit of housecleaning with another small signing on Wednesday, as they re-signed tough guy Aaron Downey to a one-year deal.

For all you poolies, you'll only be looking for Downey to contribute to your penalty minute totals, as he isn't a scoring winger at all. In 56 contests for the Wings, Downey only registered three assists, but he did have a whopping 116 minutes in penalties, which is just a bit better than a minor penalty per game. Downey is known for his tough guy ways and if he could find a full-time ride for 80+ games, he would be a fantasy gem. Sadly, the tough guy role only really gets to be on stage when the division games get a little grittier it seems.

The Red Wings are toying with the salary cap ceiling this summer, now sitting with 22 regular skaters. Since Downey's salary number wasn't disclosed this morning, we can only assume it's in the neighbourhood of $600,000-$700,000, which would put the Wings at around $56.4 million... leaving only $300,000 or less in cap space.

It's fairly safe to assume that the Wings are pretty much ready to head into camp with this strong line-up and spots will likely only be offered up for when injuries are to occur.
