The deals just keep on coming, as the Edmonton Oilers, in essence, replaced one goalie for another, in their second deal of the day. After the Dubnyk deal to Nashville, the Oilers turned around and sent a 3rd round pick to the Los Angeles Kings for goaltender Ben Scrivens.
Scrivens, who made a name for himself while Jonathan Quick was injured, has appeared in 19 games for the Kings, going 7-5-4, with 3 shutouts and 1 assist, racking up 21 points in the 2014 season. That has placed the back-up goaltender in at 226th in pool points overall, 32nd among all goalies.
This deal does put a lot of pressure on Ilya Bryzgalov, who was acquired through free agency earlier this season, to perform, while Scrivens has some winning under his belt this season. It is hard to say whether or not Scrivens is the answer, exactly, but the Oilers are going to give another goaltender a try.
With Quick healthy and preparing for the Olympics with more starts, it seemed unlikely that Scrivens was going to get much more playing time in Los Angeles, which was likely going to hurt Grant's team, as his lead has now dwindled down to 1 point after Tuesday night. The move to Edmonton for Scrivens should ensure more starts than he would see in Los Angeles, with a genuine shot to become a number one there, as Bryzgalov has not panned out to be all that they were hoping for.
Grant may be rejoicing a little, but it is still Edmonton and goalies haven't had much fun there lately.
