2018 2nd Round Draft Pick |
The Washington Capitals were out to clear some space and they did just that, sending Brooks Orpik's lump of a deal to Colorado, including pool worthy goaltender Philipp Grubauer and acquiring a 2nd round draft pick for Saturday's action.
The Capitals were in need of the cap space, as I highlighted in their year-end post and they got a screaming deal for a 2nd round pick, discarding a backup goalie and an aging defenseman for a top end draft pick.
The Avalanche, on the other hand, probably didn't see Jonathan Bernier coming back with unrestricted free agency looming and they get a mentor on their youthful blueline for one more year, not to mention, getting a lump of cap hit to bring them closer to the salary cap floor for the 2019 season.
