Habs Send Two to Juniors

The Montreal Canadiens have sent a couple of their prized prospects back down to the junior ranks for another full season with the boys. 2009 1st rounder Louis Leblanc and 2010 1st rounder Jared Tinordi, were both sent back to their respective junior teams on Monday, as the team has decided that their development would be better off down there. Scratch them from your lists, if they were there.

The Canadiens also sent 16 players down to Hamilton of the AHL, but no one of real consequence and it brought their active camp roster down to 36 players.

ImplicationsWell, I had Leblanc on the Selection Sheet in the Canadiens youth player box, Box 25, and he'll now be inactive for the whole year.  He is now a land mine pick that will get you zero points through the 2011 season, so stay away.

Predators Demote Geoffrion

The Predators have seemingly seen enough out of one of their prized prospects, forward Blake Geoffrion, and have demoted him to the AHL on Monday. Geoffrion signed a deal with much fanfare in June, but it looks as though he needs some seasoning before he makes the jump to the big club.

The Predators now have 37 players at training camp and a training camp roster update will come with 30 or less players, which should come in the week.

ImplicationsWell, I thought Geoffrion was a lock by the way most people were talking him up, so I included him on the Selection Sheet in Box 9. This now makes him into a land mine on the Sheet, likely not going to get you any points in the very near future. Since he has only gone down to the AHL, he can come up and down as the team pleases. Geoffrion isn't a complete dud, but he does have to potential to be one.

Coyotes Move Below 30 Players

The Phoenix Coyotes assigned 16 players to the minors on Monday, some having to go on waivers and clear first, bringing the team's roster total down to 28 players, plus Kurt Sauer, who is currently on the injured reserve with a head injury.  Currently on the list, there are 18 forwards, eight defense (not including Sauer) and the goaltending tandem.

Of the 18 forwards, Kyle Wellwood, on as a pro tryout, remains with the team, working hard to earn a spot in the line-up.  Also, Viktor Tikhonov returned from Russia for a shot at a roster spot, while Mikkel Boedker and Kyle Turris try for spots from the AHL squad in San Antonio.  With only 13 theoretical forward spots available, the Coyotes could just as easily cut these four and still have a cut to make, but they are obviously making a good push to try and knock someone from the Summer roster out.

With eight defensemen on the list at the moment, I would have to think that Oliver Ekman-Larsson is now a lock for the team, maybe finding some top four minutes when the season gets started.  That would all depend on his consistency.  David Schlemko and Maxim Goncharov should be fighting for the 7th spot.

Salary CapSince Wellwood is without a contract as a tryout and Sauer on the injured reserve, the Coyotes have 27 players on contract and three buyouts on the books here for an annual cap projection of $55.3 million, which is nice & safe between the cap floor and ceiling.  Cuts will easily bring down the cap number, but that really shouldn't be a concern for the cap savvy Coyotes.

Blues Go Down to 30 Players

The St. Louis Blues have now cut down their roster to 30 players with a few cuts to come shortly after or possibly during the week, with only three preseason games left to play.

The current roster is made up of 17 forwards, 10 defense and three goalies, so there should still be four forwards, three defense and a goalie to be cut before the season opener, but with three games left to go, it's very likely that the bubble players will now get at least one more time to shine and earn a job.

I would think when it is all said and done, the easiest contracts will likely be the ones that are sent down, unless there is a player that really goes above and beyond to earn that job.

Salary CapWith 30 players on their current roster and one buyout on the books, the Blues come in at an annual salary cap projection of $52.9 million, well under the salary cap ceiling and with more space to open up with the cuts upcoming.  The Blues are believed to be on a ownership-enforced budget, so there shouldn't be any real thought of going out and adding more expensive talent, unless there is some extra space at the deadline and a rental player is needed for a run.

Wild Ready to Fly to Europe

The Minnesota Wild have continued the house cleaning trend, as they prepare for their trip overseas for the NHL Premiere games in Helsinki. They have a combination of 14 players assigned and waived in order to be assigned to Houston of the AHL to clear up their roster and it looks like the Wild will be going forward with this group.

On the roster below, the Wild have three players who are injured, two will definitely be on the injured reserve at the beginning of the season (Harding and Sheppard), while Bouchard has started practicing with the team and remains optimistic that he could start the season, which suggests that he probably won't start on the IR immediately.

With Bouchard penciled into the line-up, this gives the Wild 15 forwards, nine defense and two goalies (numbers do not include Harding or Sheppard) and this will be the group that they take over to Europe, where they can have a few extra players for emergency purposes, but will be down to 23 when the team returns to North America.

Salary CapWith Harding out for the bulk of the season and Sheppard out until the new year, their cap numbers have been removed from my calculations, but the remaining 26 players and one buyout comes in at an annual projection of $58.8 million, just short of the cap ceiling this year.  Once a couple more of those numbers are removed and Bouchard's fate is actually decided, the Wild may have a little bit more flexibility near the trade deadline.

Rangers Down to 27

The assignment of Wade Redden has been finalized and he has now been shed from the cap hit for the time being. The Rangers also placed a number of players on waivers for demotion, demoted those who didn't need to be waived and released some from their professional tryouts to bring their roster number down to 27. Still included on the roster is rookie standout Derek Stepan and tryout Ruslan Fedotenko, both likely fighting for the same spot in the line-up.

This brings the camp roster down to 16 forwards, nine defense and their goaltending tandem still in camp and with Chris Drury currently on the shelf with a broken finger, there should only be a couple more cuts needed up front, as well as the blueline.

Salary CapThe Rangers likely will not get much cap relief from Drury's injury, as he should be back in 2-to-3 weeks, which means the extra spot that is considered open is really only temporary. Right now, I have 26 players on their cap hit, Fedotenko is still unsigned, at an annual cap projection of $60.9 million, only $1.5 million over the cap with four or five cuts left to make. That will bring the cap hit down under the ceiling with ease, but leaves very little flexibility for the rest of the season.

Thrashers Getting Their Roster Trimmed

The Thrashers are down to an active roster of 30 players after sending a few more players down to the minors on Monday and placing Patrice Cormier on the injured reserve with his broken foot.  This leaves 18 forwards, 10 defense and their goaltending tandem for the rest of camp.

This should leave five cuts left to make at the forward position and three on defense, which may not be the easiest of decisions to make, as I've seen many of the names pop up on scoring sheets and in some other chatter, suggesting that they've done well in this camp.

The Thrashers have four games this week, including a home and home with the Nashville Predators, giving some more opportunities to the bubble players to make a greater impression.

Salary CapThere is still one unsigned invite in Thrashers camp, Enver Lisin, who has been sticking around, but I would have to think that he will really have to dazzle to get ahead of couple of these rookies still in camp.  Alex Burmistrov has yet to sign his entry-level deal, but by the sounds of how he is playing, one may not be very far off.  Without Lisin, Burmistrov and Cormier from the cap calculation, I have the Thrashers at 28 players and one buyout for an annual cap projection of $48.2 million, safely secured inside the cap constraints.

Stars Waive Players to Trim Roster to 28

With news that the Dallas Stars have placed five of their training camp members on waivers on Sunday, this now leaves the team with 28 players on their roster, leaving only minimal cuts left to polish off their opening night roster.

The Stars are currently looking very healthy at the moment and have a pretty good crop of players to choose from going into the last full week of camp.  I would be looking to see the final cuts look like one goalie, two defensemen and three or four forwards.  Even if it were the last numbers off the roster below, there are some decent names being taken off, so I would be hesitant to gamble on many of these names at the moment.

This week, the Stars have three preseason games, which will likely be very important for all the fringe players involved.  Their season gets started October 8th in New Jersey.

UPDATE (1:33PM): The Dallas Stars released their roster to show 30 players, with some of the waived players still on the roster. Waiving them obviously didn't mean they were going to be sent down, but it does give them the option if they do clear in the next 30 days. The updated roster is below.

Salary CapThe Stars' 30-man roster, plus their residual cap hit from Sean Avery now leaves them at an annual cap projection of $56.1 million, well below the cap ceiling. With six or seven cuts still to come, the Stars should be around the team's budget, which was disclosed at some point, but I don't have it handy at the moment.

Lightning Chop Down to 28

I do believe one of the first casualties of my Summer rosters fell on Sunday, as Paul Szczechura was demoted down to Norfolk of the AHL. He wasn't a high ranking forward, but he was on the Summer roster for the better part of the off-season, so I thought I would make a note of that.

The Lightning have now cut their enormous roster down to 28 players, including Eric Perrin, who is still currently playing on a professional tryout at the moment.  So far, he has done really well to stick with the club this far into the preseason.

I would think that the goaltending tandem is pretty well set to go with Ellis and Smith, but with some preseason action still to go, it still may not be a bad idea to keep Desjardins around for some extra work and keeping a goalie in the press box, not having to worry about working on the evening.

The seventh defenseman looks to be down to three candidates in Roy, Smaby and Vernace.  None of the three are going to be great pool candidates, but they should have a shot at some ice time at the very least.

With 16 forwards on the books, there will likely have to be three cuts, possibly only two, going into opening night.  The biggest surprises being Perrin and 2007 draft pick, Johan Harju, who has been playing in Sweden for the bulk of his career already.  The last couple spots on the forward lines should be hotly contested through the remainder of camp and you may find a sleeper in there after all.

Salary CapWith an unsigned Perrin, two buyouts and a 27-man signed roster, the Lightning are also sitting in pretty good shape with only a few cuts to go. I have them currently projected at $56.6 million, as the complete package.  With demotions and a possible signing, the Lightning are doing really well against the cap and might be a player at the trade deadline, especially if this line-up can translate a lot of their potential on paper into wins in the standings.

Ducks Down to 30

The Ducks have taken their current training camp roster down to 30 players on Sunday night, assigning four to the minors, one to the juniors and releasing Stephane Veilleux from his tryout.  With injuries, the roster really only stands at 28 players, but both Jason Jaffray and Toni Lydman are still with the team to nurse their ailments.

The goaltending tandem is as expected in Jonas Hiller and Curtis McElhinney, while there is a good fight for the fifth, sixth and seventh defensive spots on the blueline.  I would assume that Lubomir Visnovsky, Andy Sutton, Sheldon Brookbank and Paul Mara all have jobs secured for the most part, it will be interesting to see who comes out as the remainder of the blueline.

With 16 active forwards, there should only need to be three cuts made during this camp.  The Ducks will likely be looking for a bit more veteran savvy with a shallow defense this year, so I really don't expect to see  some of the younger prospects move up at forward.

Salary CapThe Ducks management have done a pretty good job keeping this team under the cap, but in the post-Niedermayer era, that should be a much easier task to accomplish. The 30-player roster above and a buyout comes in at around $59.4 million, which is the salary cap ceiling and with a number of cuts still to be made, plus some likely injury discounts to take into account, the Ducks should be sitting pretty in this department.

Last Night's Preseason Notable Players (Sep 26)

In an early start on Sunday, the Red Wings played host to the Rangers and ended up beating their Original Six counterparts 5-3 in the end. Jimmy Howard got the nod for the entire match for Detroit and made 18 saves for the victory. Howard should be taking the number one role again this year and should have a refreshed line-up in front of him. Leading the way on the scoresheet for the Red Wings was Brian Rafalski, who scored a goal and added 3 assists. Rafalski may be looked upon to be the main offensive trigger man for the Red Wings this year, as Lidstrom rounds out his game to ensure that he remains a plus player. Dan Cleary, Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom all chimed in with a a goal and an assist in the victory as well.

It's hard to deny, but Alex Auld has had a much better preseason than his goaltending counterpart in Montreal so far, as he registered another win in a complete game versus the Minnesota Wild on Sunday night. Auld only had to make 11 stops for the victory, but earned it nonetheless. Undrafted prospect Brendon Nash led the Canadiens in scoring on the night with a goal and an assist in 21 minutes of play, while Max Pacioretty added a pair of assists as well.

The Wild did manage to have a small bright spot shine for them in their loss to Montreal, as Antti Miettinen picked up a pair of assists in the game.  Miettinen had a bit of a down year in the league last season, but still managed to pot 20 goals.  The Wild will need him to pick up the pace a little more in 2011, if they want to remain in the thick of most races.

The Oilers had the scoring display of the preseason so far on Sunday night with an 8-2 romp over the Canucks and a good number of guys got into the action in this one. Jordan Eberle and Shawn Horcoff led the way with 2 goals and an assist each, while Linus Omark had a goal and 2 assists. Dustin Penner had a pair of goals and Jim Vandermeer, Taylor Hall and Gilbert Brule all tallied a pair of assists in the win. It was a scoring bonanza, to say the least. Nikolai Khabibulin made his first start of the preseason, making 26 saves in the victory.  There seems to be very little not to like about his Oilers team at the moment, especially if they can skate and score like this on a regular basis.

Finally, the St. Louis Blues looked to have played a very solid game against the Colorado Avalanche, beating them 2-0 in Denver on Sunday night. Ben Bishop made all 29 saves in all 60 minutes for the shutout win, but that may only be a footnote in this preseason, as I would imagine the goaltending tandem is pretty well set as it is. Tallying a couple points on the scoresheet in the victory was Brad Boyes, who assisted on the opening goal and then added an empty-net goal in the final minute of play to ice the game.  If the Blues can play this kind of defense for a good part of this season, it will definitely make their goaltending look really good in the pool points department.

Maple Leafs Trim Down

According to the cuts today and some cuts that were made in secret, the Maple Leafs now have a roster of 30 players and they can now start working some systems with the players that remain in camp and go from there.  My source for the updated list is here, the final cuts will be made on Monday, when the waiver wire opens again, if you've been keeping track at home.

From this look, a goalie, three defensemen and four forwards still to cut from the roster, which is a way over budget as it is.  There has been some scuttlebutt that the Leafs will try and rid themselves of Jeff Finger from their line-up, but that hasn't been confirmed or denied much lately.  It should be a fierce fight to the finish for this group though.

Salary CapNow that we've hit 30 players remaining on this list, I've combined all the numbers, so we kind of have a play-by-play how much each further cut takes away. Right now, I have this 30-player roster, plus one buyout and one cap overage penalty sitting at $66.3 million, which works out to be $6.9 million over the cap ceiling.  If Finger was the first to go, he would take that down by $3.5 million and the cap hit would certainly be more manageable at $3.4 million over and seven more players to dispatch of.

Then what?

Hurricanes Down to 26

The Hurricanes are only a few cuts away from having their opening night roster set and there are a good number of kids remaining on their roster.

Looking at their roster below, they look to be only a goalie, defenseman and forward away from a set 23-man roster, so I would have to think the last few jobs are going to be hotly contested for.  If I was going to offer up guesses towards the cuts, I would have guess that Pogge, Sanguinetti and Dalpe would be the easier cuts, likely not having much trouble going down to the minors, if demoted.

It should also be taken into consideration, Sergei Samsonov's injury, which hasn't been fully disclosed yet and it may keep him out of the opening night roster, saving a cut for the time being.

Nevertheless, I think this is a pretty decent looking squad, if everyone can perform their roles accordingly.

Salary CapNo salary cap concerns here at the moment. Even with a 29-man roster above, the Hurricanes and two buyouts would only come up to an annual cap hit of $53.6 million, far short of the cap ceiling.  If the team is going to be spending to a franchise-imposed ceiling, the cuts may be dependent on that number as well.  How the team is shaping up thus far, the final cuts look like they will be good enough.

Avalanche Down to 29

The Colorado Avalanche are now under 30 players on their training camp roster and there really hasn't been many surprises in the players that they have cut so far. The Summer roster remains intact and some of the hopefuls that I have on the Selection Sheet remain.  The Avalanche will still need to make a few cuts from here, but its getting close.

If any of your sleepers do not appear on this list, you may want to consider cutting them down from your list.

Streit Out Indefinitely

The worst case scenario has hit the Islanders with their injury to Mark Streit, as they have now scheduled the Swiss defender for major shoulder surgery, which should keep him out of the line-up for upwards of six months. That will all but end his regular season and without Streit in the line-up, the likelihood of challenging for the playoffs has now taken a major hit.

ImplicationsStreit may have been one of the potentials in the top Eastern Conference defenseman box, if you didn't like player like Sergei Gonchar, Chris Pronger or Mike Green.  Streit was also likely going to be a top defenseman pick in the draft, to which he'll now sit without being picked this year (in theory), taking the quality of offensive defensemen down a notch or two.

Last Night's Preseason Notable Players (Sep 25)

The Penguins had a fairly strong statistical effort against the Blue Jackets on Saturday night, beating Columbus 3-1 in the process. Marc-Andre Fleury got the whole 60 minutes in the net for the Penguins, making 32 saves and earning the win in the process. Not a lot of combined offense in this one though, only Arron Asham came away with a multiple-point game on the scoresheet, picking up a goal and an assist. Asham may have found a good new home to pick up some extra points in.

The Rangers topped the Devils in overtime on Saturday night in a high-scoring change of pace, winning 5-4 in dramatic fashion. Henrik Lundqvist took the entire game for the Blueshirts, making 25 stops in the win and gaining that extra little bit of help to be drafted a little higher on Tuesday. Michael Del Zotto scored the overtime winner and had 3 assists for a 4-point night, while training camp tryout Ruslan Fedotenko had a goal and 2 assists, as did Ryan Callahan.  Defenseman Matt Gilroy also had a goal and an assist to have his name added to the paragraph, so all in all, it was a pretty good night for the Rangers.

The Devils were no slouches in the loss tonight, having a few names rise to the top. Zach Parise came back again for another big night, picking up 3 assists, while linemate Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and an assist as well. Andy Greene joined the Devils party with a goal and an assist as well, giving New Jersey a little more credibility from the back end.

The Sabres hosted the Leafs on Saturday night and were not the best of hosts for this one, beating their guests 3-1. The only player of note from this contest is Derek Roy, who had a pair of assists in this contest. I don't think Roy needs too much help getting a good pick in the draft, but everything helps, right?  Roy should be a pretty safe bet again this year, especially in the high-to-mid level picks.

The Hurricanes and Thrashers wet in a chippy affair, by the looks of the 3rd period penalty summary. Still, the Hurricanes came out on top 1-0, with Jeff Skinner getting the only goal for the Hurricanes and Cam Ward making all 32 saves for the shutout win.  Both players might be making enough of an impression to get some higher consideration for the draft this year, as it looks like Skinner should be making the squad and Ward should be returning to his number one post.

The Panthers and Bruins clashed at the TD Gardens on Saturday night and regulation and overtime couldn't solve anything, so it was a shootout to decide the result. Scott Clemmensen, who played all 65 minutes for the Panthers tonight, stopped Tyler Seguin for the win and earned a mention on the post today. Clemmensen made 23 stops in the 4 periods and also made two saves in the shootout for the victory.  On the scoresheet, Marty Reasoner, more of a defensive forward, picked up a pair of assists in the win as well.

The Senators laid waste upon Carey Price and the Canadiens on Saturday night and it really looked good on the team from Ottawa. Jason Spezza jumped into the forefront with 2 goals and an assist, which the Sens will need more often, if they want to make a bigger name for themselves in the playoffs this year.  Nick Foligno had a pair of goals, Bobby Butler had a goal and an assist and Chris Campoli had a pair of assists in the game as well.  The Sens might be in good shape scoring-wise, by the looks of things.

The Blackhawks took control of their game against the Red Wings late in the 1st period and did not give up control afterwards, leading themselves to a 4-2 victory. Marty Turco made 23 saves in the win, playing the entire game for Chicago. Marian Hossa, Duncan Keith and Jack Skille all had a goal and an assist in the game, while Fernando Pisani had a pair of assists. If the Blackhawks offense is going to score like this, Turco may turn out to be a pretty good option for your draft goalie, possibly even in a high pick.

A 3-2 shootout win for the Flyers over the Wild didn't do too much for the scoring numbers, but it may have made the goaltending decision a tad more difficult, with Sergei Bobrovsky earning the victory, playing all 65 minutes for Philadelphia last night.  The Russian rookie had to make 26 stops in the first 65 minutes and all 3 saves in the extra time exhibition.  I think he's still technically behind the 8-ball for a roster spot this season, but at least he's making his case to be the first call up for injury or poor production.

The Dallas Stars earned a preseason victory over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night, with Brent Krahn earning a preseason victory, playing the entire game and making 19 saves. Krahn is in place to possibly steal the back-up job away from Andrew Raycroft and a win will help his cause. Brendan Morrow scored a pair of goals and Mike Ribeiro had assists on both those goals to guide the offense to the win as well. Ribeiro has been in the middle of plenty of trade rumours out of town, but it'd be hard to trade a guy that helps the captain score like this.

The Capitals brought a good number of their big guns out to Nashville, but the Predators only held their offense to two goals. The Capitals defense was just a shade better though, helping beat Nashville 2-1 in the end. Mike Green was the most notable player in this one, scoring a goal and an assist, leading whatever offense the Capitals could generate on the night.  I'm beginning to wonder if Green is going to be a 1st round pick in the draft on Tuesday... if its going to be as deep as I think it will be, Green might just go near the end of the round.

It was a good ol' fashioned shootout at the Saddledome, that coincidentally ended up in a shootout, which the Flames took in the end, 5-4. Ales Kotalik had a goal and 2 assists to lead the way for the Flames and he also scored the shootout winner in the exhibition frame. Marc Giordano chimed in with 3 assists, while rookie defenseman T.J. Brodie potted a pair of 1st period goals as well.  The chances of Brodie jumping onto this stacked blueline are fairly slim, but he does make a point for first call-up notice when the season starts.

The Lightning brought all of their big guns out to Calgary for this game and they didn't disappoint the scoresheet at all.  Martin St. Louis had 3 assists, Vincent Lecavalier scored a pair of goals, Steven Stamkos had a goal and an assist and Pavel Kubina had 2 assists as well.  The Lightning are going to be ripe with players to choose early and often for the draft on Tuesday, I don't imagine many will stick around too long.

The Canucks finally flexed their division winning muscle on Saturday night, beating Anaheim 4-1 at home. Roberto Luongo made 28 stops and played the entire game for the Canucks, looked fairly sharp throughout. Offensively, it was none other than the Sedin twins working their magic on the ice. Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin each scored a goal and an assist in the win, looking steady throughout the game.

The Sharks and Coyotes played in a set of split squad games on Saturday night, with the home teams taking each game. In Phoenix, Ilya Bryzgalov got the nod for the entire game, making 21 saves in the 2-1 win. He will have to be the backbone of this team again, if they want the same kind of success that they had in 2010. Radim Vrbata had a couple of goals in the win, while Ray Whitney added assists to each goal. That doesn't sound like a bad tandem right there, don't you think? Not much to speak of in the other game though, since they only had one goal in the loss.

The Sharks only had one goal in the game in Phoenix, but their home team squad had a little better outing, beating the Coyotes 3-1. Patrick Marleau and Dany Heatley each scored a goal and an assist in the win, while defenseman Justin Braun had a pair of assists in this game. There does look like there is still an opening for the 7th defenseman on the team, where Braun is likely aiming to finish after this camp, but even as a number seven, he won't be a great candidate for many points this year.
