On Saturday morning, Sergei Samsonsov was dealt to the Chicago Blackhawks from the Montreal Canadiens for Jassen Cullimore and Tony Salmelainen. Talk about a salary and player dump. The Canadiens were having lots of problems handling Samsonov and his $3.5 million contract, so they were able to dish him off to Chicago for a pair of cheap players.
Samsonov finished the season 330th in the pool points race. He'll generally finish in the top 200 if he can get a full season played, but last season, he only managed to stay in the line-up for 63 games. In 63 games, he only managed 26 points. In Chicago, he'll have an opportunity to play with guys like Martin Havlat, Tuomo Ruutu and/or Jonathon Toews. Things to consider in a draft as a possible sleeper.
On the other side, the Habs will pick up defender Jassen Cullimore and forward Tony Salmelainen. In Cullimore, they'll get a big defender with very little offensive upside, but he'll be a big rock in the place of Sheldon Souray, if he doesn't re-sign. Salmelainen has been a Blackhawk prospect for sometime, only having a couple opportunities with the big club. The 25 year-old Finn will have ample opportunity with the Habs for a lot less money. Cullimore ($1.9) + Salmelainen ($0.65) will open up a bit more money to try and reel in Souray. It's an extra million to play with.
In a minor deal this past week, the Tampa Bay Lightning signed forward, Jan Hlavac, to a one year deal. Hlavac, who spent the last couple seasons in Europe, played a few years in the NHL as a support player. Hlavac in 2001/02 was 240th in pool scoring before falling into the 300's. He should be a pretty cheap winger when the team is pretty well top heavy on the contract status, so he should make the roster as a sub-million dollar player.
