Last week, the New Jersey Devils signed one of their key defensemen, Andy Greene, to a new 5-year contract extension. Greene, will be making $3 million in the coming season, which was to be the last on the 31-year old's current deal. Instead of hitting unrestricted free agency, Greene will be making $5 million per year on his new deal. In the 2014 season, Greene had 8 goals and 32 points, ranking him 44th among all defensemen and he should make for a good mid-range blueliner in the coming year, so make sure you have him ranked accordingly.
On the weekend, the Tampa Bay Lightning sorted out their number one goaltender, Ben Bishop, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2015 season, is now signed through the 2017 season. Bishop will also be getting a raise from his current deal, which carries a $2.3 million cap hit, bumping up to a $5.95 million hit for the two seasons. Bishop was the 5th best goalie in the hockey pool last season, despite getting injured before the playoff run, picking up 37 wins and 86 points on the year. He will be a popular option in the draft this year, likely a 1st round selection.
On more of the fringe side of the hockey pool argument, Anaheim Ducks forward Patrick Maroon signed a 3-year contract extension on the weekend as well. Maroon finished 199th in forward scoring in 2014, potting 11 goals and 29 points in 62 games and he may have found a leg up on a roster spot for the 2015 season. If the draft was to have 24 teams again this year, Maroon would be right in the thick of the discussion and may end up being somewhat of a sleeper pick, assuming he can play an 82-game season.
