Caps Clearing Space With Deal With Colorado

2018 Season July 1st, 2018
To Colorado POS Age GP G/W Points Years Cap Hit
Philipp Grubauer G 26 35 15 37 0 RFA
Brooks Orpik D 37 81 0 10 1 $5.5 mil
To Washington POS Age GP Goals Points Years Cap Hit
2018 2nd Round Draft Pick

The Washington Capitals were out to clear some space and they did just that, sending Brooks Orpik's lump of a deal to Colorado, including pool worthy goaltender Philipp Grubauer and acquiring a 2nd round draft pick for Saturday's action.

The Capitals were in need of the cap space, as I highlighted in their year-end post and they got a screaming deal for a 2nd round pick, discarding a backup goalie and an aging defenseman for a top end draft pick.

The Avalanche, on the other hand, probably didn't see Jonathan Bernier coming back with unrestricted free agency looming and they get a mentor on their youthful blueline for one more year, not to mention, getting a lump of cap hit to bring them closer to the salary cap floor for the 2019 season.
