The only Game 7 in the first round ended well for the away team as it was hard to say that the home team even showed up to play on Wednesday night. Broadcasters across Canada have billed this game as the worst Game 7... ever! I could safely say, it's the worst one I have ever seen.
Teemu Selanne scored the winning goal and Ruslan Salei added a goal and an assist for the Ducks as they eliminated 93 selections from the playoff pool in a 3-0 shutout of the Flames. Vitaly Vishnevski had the only other real counting point in the pool as Jeff Friesen and starting goalie, Ilya Bryzgalov both were non-picks in the pool. Who would have seen them coming?
Players eliminated and their points:
Jarome Iginla, 5G 3A 1GWG
Miikka Kiprusoff, 3W
Daymond Langkow, 1G 5A
Kristian Huselius, 2G 4A
Robyn Regehr, 1G 3A
Tony Amonte, 2G 1A
Matthew Lombardi, 2A
Chuck Kobasew, 1G 1GWG
Roman Hamrlik, 2A
Dion Phaneuf, 1G
Jordan Leopold, 1A
With the Flames now eliminated, all four top seeds in the West have been eliminated. The playoff matchups for Round 2 in the West look like this...
San Jose will host Edmonton
and
Anaheim will host Colorado
FIRST ROUND FACTS
The two most popular teams in the pool, Detroit and Calgary, were both eliminated. Between the two teams, there were 200 selections of a possible 234 (85%).
The highest scoring teams in the pool for the first round...
New Jersey 56 points
Buffalo 55
Ottawa 53
Edmonton 50
The lowest scoring team in the pool were the swept New York Rangers with a combined 5 points between pool players.
Three players were tied after the first round for most points...
Patrik Elias (2 teams)
Dany Heatley (29 teams)
Jason Spezza (12 teams)
They all had 11 points. Six more players were tied with 10 points a piece... one of them being eliminated from the playoffs, Peter Forsberg.
