A goal and an assist highlighted the evening for the little brother, Rob Niedermayer last night. The assist was most important, as it was a feed to big brother, Scott, for the game winner in overtime. Rob, a Box 3 forward, was taken five times in the pool, not at all as popular as his big brother, but he hasn't really slouched in his Box's scoring either... having 5 points so far. Rob has been known for his playoff beards over the last few years... this being the third time in five years that the Ducks have reached this point of the playoffs, so he's been well practiced. The overtime winner also saw a change in the leader... only Benson has both brothers in the Top 4 and it was enough to get the lead (via the tie-breakers). The Niedermayer brothers could be Benny's meal ticket to a money position down the stretch.
Game Winning Goal Scorer
As it was mentioned in the Spotlight, Scott Niedermayer scored the winning goal for the Ducks 14 minutes into the first overtime period last night to even the series at one game a piece. That was Scott's second winning goal of the playoffs and it now gives him 9 points in the playoffs so far, which puts him a clear 3rd place in Box 4... behind series compatriots, Nicklas Lidstrom (17) and Chris Pronger (12). Scott was pegged to be the big dog in this Box, as he was chosen 43 times in the pool, while Lidstrom and Pronger were only chosen 44 times combined. Maybe everyone got the wrong Duck.
Game 3 of the Sabres & Senators series goes tonight at 5pm on CBC from the Scotiabank Place in Ottawa. With the Sabres already behind the 8-Ball of sorts in the series, they'll be missing one of their key (non-pool) defensemen in Henrik Tallinder tonight. That's probably one of the last things the Sabres wanted to have happen is to subject a young defenseman to the wolves they call Spezza, Alfredsson and Heatley. Obviously, the Sabres cannot afford to let Game 3 slip away, so it will take a lot of extra effort from everyone... and hopefully that translates into some serious pool points for everyone... or the people who are going to make the stretch run exciting.
