The move makes for some considerable savings for Minnesota's cap budget, in the neighbourhood of $5 million for the coming season, as the team's hit for the buyout in 2017 would be $1.5 million, against his $6.5 million cap hit he would have, if he stayed with the club.
Vanek still has some hockey pool value to him, as he finished 126th in forwards scoring last season, picking up 18 goals and 41 points in 74 games with the Wild, but he might not have the same value he once had. Be sure to consider your options carefully here.
