Conditional 2020 3rd Round Draft Pick |
The New York Rangers rebuild continues with a couple of draft pick assets coming from the Dallas Stars for veteran forward Mats Zuccarello.
The Stars were shut out by the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night and shortly after, the announcement came that they added another offensive piece to their puzzle in the speedy Norwegian forward. Despite their loss tonight, the Stars are still in the Western Conference playoff picture, but it's so tight there, that work needed to be done to ensure that they make it in, hence this deal. The Stars want to be there and this is the first sign that they are serious.
Zuccarello has been on the trade block for the better part of the season and clearly the Rangers wanted to maximize what they could get to help their rebuild along. Both draft picks coming back the other way are conditional, the 2nd could become a 1st, if the Stars win two playoffs series and then the 2020 3rd pick can be a 1st rounder as well, if the Stars re-sign Zuccarello. It could be a very expensive deal for the Stars or just a somewhat expensive deal for the Stars.
With the evening more than halfway done on Saturday, John P.'s team looks at this deal and is glad that Zuccarello is finally moved, since he was a healthy scratch today for the Rangers, taking a skater game away from his side today. John's team has fallen down to 14th this week, now 13 points out of the top 10. This move for one of his forwards could be a positive, but it may just be a lateral move from one inconsistent offensive team to another.
