Chara Signs Long Extension

The big man for Boston will remain the Bruins captain for quite some time to come. Zdeno Chara signed a brand new 7-year contract extension, said to be worth $45.5 million, which works out to be a $6.5 million cap hit per season.  This will give the Bruins some definite stability on their blueline and their leadership core for a long time to come.  The 7-year deal will take him through the 2018 season, where it'll finish with Chara being 41 years old.

In 2010, Chara had a pretty good year with 44 points in 80 games for the Bruins and was a big factor in the Bruins making the playoffs.  Unfortunately, we couldn't say much about the playoff run, as it was a very disappointing one for Boston.  Nevertheless, the Bruins finding their way to the Spring Dance was largely on Chara's shoulders and it will be again, as they open the season in Prague on Saturday.

Chara was taken fairly early in this year's hockey pool draft, picked in the 3rd round, 48th overall by Jani.  Jani has opened up the season well, sitting in 6th going into Saturday's action and Chara hasn't stepped on the ice yet.
