2015 Draft Class Signings (July 11)

The Carolina Hurricanes are in the middle of their prospect development camp, where their top pick in the 2015 draft, defenseman Noah Hanifin, is participating this weekend. News out of the camp reports that the 5th overall pick in the draft has signed his entry-level contract and will be moving forward with the Hurricanes, seemingly right away.

Hanifin gets the entry-level max deal, which will carry an annual cap hit of $925,000 and will also have some performance bonuses, which would be applied at the end of each year of the entry-level deal.

With the signing, Hanifin will come out of the NCAA ranks after only one season with Boston College and it will be interesting to see if he can make the team out of camp or if he has to resort to working on his game in the junior ranks.  His size suggests he could be ready, but there are not very many spots open on that blueline, so it will be a good grind for him this Fall.

The Nashville Predators signed a 2015 2nd round pick on Friday, Russian forward Yakov Trenin, giving him his 3-year entry-level deal, starting this season.  Trenin played in the QMJHL last season, suiting up for Gatineau, and the scouting on him is he is pretty good on the puck and is starting to play a two-way game, so it's hard to say where or when he'll fit into the NHL, unless the Predators carve out a little niche for him.

With some of his development needs being skating and strength, it is very likely that he'll play another year or two in junior, but as a part of the draft class this Summer, he gets a mention.
