With the signing of Jimmy Hayes earlier today, the Bruins also announced that they signed forward Brett Connolly to a new 1-year deal, worth a shade over $1 million, adding him as another possible option to take on some of the offensive responsibilities next season. Connolly split last season between Tampa Bay and Boston, picking up 17 points in 55 games, but with a little extra push, he could be a low end pool-worthy forward, but living up to his draft position in 2010, seems to be fading fast.
I am having a tough time deciding on whether or not this is really a fringe signing or not, but the indications suggest that it might be. The Edmonton Oilers traded a mid-round 2014 prospect to the Chicago Blackhawks for the rights to restricted free agent keeper, Anders Nilsson, and then turned around and signed him to a 1-year, $1 million deal, which apparently is a one-way deal, which means, even if he heads to the minors, he's getting paid the full amount. It does suggest that they would prefer to have him as Cam Talbot's backup this season, but no one is going to officially say that, until Ben Scrivens gets dealt.
