On Friday, the Detroit Red Wings took one more step closer to a full roster, signing forward Gustav Nyquist to a new 4-year deal, worth a reported $19 million. Nyquist and the Red Wings were headed towards salary arbitration, but even before anything was even scheduled, the two sides managed to come to an agreement.
The Red Wings had been busy in this off-season, dealing with the open market to start and now they are finishing up their business in-house. All in all, it's starting to look quite promising.
Nyquist had a very successful 2015 season, finishing 91st overall in pool scoring, 65th among all forwards, scoring 27 goals and 54 points in all 82 games with the Red Wings.
The 25-year old Swede was also 4th on the team in scoring, 2nd on the team in goals, so he was a key part of their offense last season and they will look to him to keep that offense up and the team has picked up a few new pieces to help ensure that it happens.
Nyquist has quietly turned himself into a very good hockey pool player, as he plays a solid game and picks up a very respectable amount of points. With the Red Wings adding an offensive boost in Mike Green on the back end, that should not only give gains to the newly-signed forward, it should boost the rest of the team around him.
I think Nyquist will take another step forward in his development in Detroit, given that he has already played in four NHL seasons, two of them at a full-time click. Detroit has brought him along well, not to mention his teammates Tomas Tatar and Riley Sheahan.
The Red Wings may be a difficult team to play against and a great team to pick from in 2016.
SHERPA: Nyquist... 4 years, $19 million.
BIG DEAL: That is okay.
SHERPA: Yeah, not too shabby.
Believe it or not, sometimes... he's a man of few words.
