The festivities for the trade deadline weekend have officially begun here on the blog. I think for most deals, now that it is the weekend will be covered and we'll get down to it.

The Panthers made a move on Friday afternoon to become a bit more gritty, as they acquired veteran forward Jerred Smithson from the Nashville Predators for a low-round pick.  The Panthers have likely pointed out a void that needed some attention and that would be some good ol' fashioned grit and they got some in Smithson.  Smithson should provide some good bottom-six minutes, with that Western Conference strength to his game, possibly something that would help the Panthers get over some tough minutes in the early parts of a game.

The Predators are by no means sellers at this deadline, as they are in the thick of it all in the West, but apparently they can part with a player like Smithson.  This should open up a spot for someone younger, possibly with a bit more spunk in his game, another thing the Predators could be looking for.

There's no pool impact in this trade, as Smithson wasn't taken in any of the pools, nor will he likely feature on the playoff pool.
