The key restricted free agents are starting to fall off the list, as the Stanley Cup Finals wind down and we near the true beginning of the NHL's silly off-season.
The Philadelphia Flyers announced on Friday afternoon that they have re-signed defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere to a new multi-year deal. The deal works out to be a 6-year, $27 million contract, which works out to be a $4.5 million cap hit per season, one hell of a deal for a premier defenseman.
The 24-year old finished his sophomore season without the same kind of fanfare his rookie season finished with, but it was still more than pool worthy, as his scoring totals were good enough for 28th among all defensemen, scoring 7 goals and 39 points in 76 games.
The Flyers blueline is starting to develop into quite the powerhouse, as the youth movement has proven to be quite lucrative, when it comes to their offense. Between Gostisbehere and 2017 rookie Ivan Provorov, these two will be the catalysts for a good portion of the team's offense in the next few years (and possibly more), which is a great way to work your franchise. This signing means the Flyers now have four of their five pool worthy defensemen in the 2017 season signed on, but the jury is still out on whether or not they'll bring back Michael Del Zotto, who is likely headed to unrestricted free agency on July 1st.
