The Chicago Blackhawks are hoping they've hit another home run for the 2018 season, signing undrafted free agent defenseman Jan Rutta on Wednesday morning. The 26-year old Czech was one of the big standout players at this year's World Championship and teams were beating down his door to bring him over to North America for the coming season.
Rutta has played the last four seasons in the Czech League, putting up some reasonable numbers from the blueline and he brings some quality size to the table, 6'3" and 190 lbs., which should give him a pretty good shot at making the club.
Given his age, Rutta has signed a 1-year entry-level deal (cap hit not disclosed), which will immediately bring him to unrestricted free agency next summer, but for the right price this year, it's worth it for the Blackhawks.
