Reports surfaced on Friday morning, the deadline to qualify restricted free agents, so teams could retain the restricted free agency rights, that the Montreal Canadiens opted not to give defenseman Nikita Nesterov a qualifying offer, thus he'll be an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. The Canadiens still have time to exclusively negotiate with the 24-year old defenseman, but usually these decisions come with the idea that there is no intention to keep the player on for the future.
Last season, Nesterov finished with 4 goals and 17 points in 48 games between Tampa Bay and Montreal, finishing among a group of defenders at 17 points, thus considering him pool worthy at 105th in defensemen scoring. He could be a viable asset somewhere in the league and one we'll keep our eye out for.
