Athanasiou Re-Signs in Detroit

The Detroit Red Wings had a fair bit of work to do in this summer, within its own organization and on Thursday, they were able to take care of one of their key restricted free agents in Andreas Athanasiou, signing him to a 2-year, $6 million deal.

The 23-year old forward has emerged as a very good all around figure for the Red Wings in recent seasons, having a pool worthy year in 2018.  He finished with 16 goals and 33 points in 71 games for the club, good enough for 189th among all forwards.  He hasn't quite been able to string together a full 82-game season yet for the team, but you would have to imagine that he could be a much more valuable player if he did.

The Red Wings have done some revamping of their lineup already this summer and now the purse strings will start to get a little tighter.  The team still has to re-sign Dylan Larkin and Anthony Mantha and there's a good chance they'll give their top draft pick, Filip Zadina, a spin at training camp with an eye on making the club, so it will be interesting to see how they pan this out.
