Fringe Signings (Jul 6)

The Columbus Blue Jackets added a little bit more grit on Thursday, signing unrestricted free agent forward Anthony Duclair to a 1-year, $650,000 deal. The 22-year old wasn't qualified as a restricted free agent by the Blackhawks, letting him go to the open market and now the Jackets hope that he can live up to some of that potential he once had.

In 2018, between Arizona and Chicago, Duclair scored 11 goals and 23 points in 56 games, good enough for 264th among all forwards, a little ways outside of pool worthiness.  He has been picked in the pool before and if he can find the right combination in Columbus, there's no reason why he couldn't feature again.

The Carolina Hurricanes re-signed defenseman Trevor Van Riemsdyk on Thursday, giving him a new 2-year, $4.6 million deal to rejoin a very impressive blueline already.  Van Riemsdyk was qualified by the Hurricanes, retaining his restricted free agent rights and he had some arbitration rights, which were taken care of by signing this new deal.

In 79 games with Carolina, the 26-year old finished with 3 goals and 16 points, ranking him 122nd among defensemen, but with some new faces added, he may not find the ice-time that would lift him up into the top 100, but it's a long season and anything can happen.
