Bad news coming out of Carolina Hurricanes camp on the opening of training camp, as the team has announced that defenseman Joni Pitkanen is now scheduled to be out for the entire 2014 season with a heel injury.
Pitkanen, 30, underwent off-season surgery to repair his broken heel, but the team has revealed that as much as the surgery was a success, his recovery was far from a success and the Finnish blueliner still cannot put any weight on his foot and he is in no shape to play hockey this season.
This is a pretty huge blow to the Hurricanes, as he would be someone that would generate offense from the back and that will be a tough void to fill. The team will be looking into different options for replacing Pitkanen's minutes, but nothing of note has popped up yet.
Strike Pitkanen from all of your lists, he's not worth taking this year.
