One of the top unrestricted free agent defensemen has found a home, but only on a tryout basis. 30-year old Cody Franson has signed on to join the Blackhawks training camp this month and he'll try to crack a blueline that might have an extra bubble player or two. The Blackhawks do have some projected open cap space, which could be ear-marked for Franson, but he's the kind of player that could price himself out of Chicago, if he's not careful.
Last season, Franson finished 88th among all defensemen in scoring, picking up 3 goals and 19 points in 68 games with the Sabres. He's currently the only pool worthy player from last season on a PTO, but there's still lots of time before camp starts, so we'll see what happens with other free agents.
