Recent Contract Extensions (Jul 2)
July 1st was also the first day that players and teams could officially sign contract extensions for players who are starting the last year of their current deal. The Tampa Bay Lightning wasted no time to get a deal done with defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who they acquired from the Rangers last season, giving him another seven years on the books, carrying a cap hit of $6.75 million per season. Of course, this doesn't kick in until the 2020 season, so for now he'll only count as a $4.7 million cap hit.
Between Tampa and New York, McDonagh finished with 4 goals and 29 points in 63 games, 61st among all defensemen in scoring.
