Top Prospect Signings (Jul 7)

The Arizona Coyotes signed their top pick from the 2018 entry draft, forward Barrett Hayton, the 5th overall selection, giving him his 3-year entry-level deal on Friday.  Hayton was the 2nd-ranked centre in the draft and climbed the rankings late in the season, but he was certainly who the Coyotes had their eye on, as they didn't waver in their pick.

Hayton spent the 2018 season with the Soo Greyhounds, registering 60 points in 63 games, but is better known for his 200-foot game, his responsibilities at both ends of the ice.  There are some bubble players on that projected Coyotes roster, who could be unseated by a kid like Hayton, so I would imagine he would get a good long look at training camp.

On Saturday morning, the Detroit Red Wings announced that they signed their top pick, the 6th overall selection in June's draft, forward Filip Zadina.  The Red Wings were fortunate to have the young Czech fall down into their laps, since he was ranked so high throughout the year, but since he was a winger, instead of a centre, he fell down the draft board a little bit.

Zadina played in Halifax with the Mooseheads, scoring like an absolute monster there, 44 goals and 82 points in 57 games, also performing well at the World Juniors for the Czech Republic and other various tournaments as well.  The Red Wings are very likely to feature Zadina in the coming year, as they were goal-starved last season.
