Vanek Heads Back to Detroit
The Detroit Red Wings have enticed Thomas Vanek to return for another spin around the rink for them, agreeing to a 1-year, $3 million deal on Sunday morning.
Vanek had a resurgence in his career, playing for both the Canucks and the Blue Jackets last season. He played in 80 games, scoring 24 goals and 56 points, which was good enough for 74th among all forwards in scoring.
The 34-year old played just over half a season with the Red Wings in the 2017 season, before being dealt to Florida for their playoff run and with the Red Wings, he was certainly productive, picking up 38 points in 48 games.
The Red Wings certainly aren't getting any younger with this signing, but they are adding the depth they need to compete in the east. If Vanek can continue to put up the points, there is a good chance that he can really help this team work their way out of the basement.
There are still more moves expected today from the Red Wings and with a little over $8 million to spend against the salary cap ceiling, one would have to believe that their plan would be to put that money to good use. Rumours are abound that a goaltender is on is way and they could sure use more depth on the blueline too.
