On Thursday night, the Florida Panthers gave their prized rookie defenseman, Erik Gudbranson, the night off as a healthy scratch against the Chicago Blackhawks. Gudbranson has yet to register a point in his first 11 NHL games, but the big bodied defender has the confidence of the coaching staff, so he'll be sticking around. The decision to make him into a healthy scratch was likely to give the rookie a bit more perspective and the team likely wanted a little bit more of a veteran presence against a good Blackhawks team. I would expect him back before too long.
It wasn't a very successful trip up to the NHL for Box 9 forward Andy Miele, as the Phoenix Coyotes decided to send him back down to the AHL after only five appearances with the club. Miele was held scoreless in all five games, failing to provide any offensive punch to the team. Another stint down in the minors to get his confidence back up could be exactly what the doctor ordered.
