Maatta Expected to Miss a Month

The injury to Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta wasn't quite as bad as originally feared, as he was cleared of any internal injuries after being checked from behind, into an open door at the visiting bench against the Minnesota Wild this week.

Instead, it sounds like it is all muscular injuries, which will heal a lot faster than any structural/internal injuries, but it will still cost the 21-year old Finn around 3-to-4 weeks on the shelf, adding to the ever-growing list of injuries that he has had in his short career.

Already having gone through issues with his thyroid and a cancer scare, Maatta was creeping his way towards the injury prone list, the annual collection of players that you should definitely avoid or at the very least, discount his value at the draft, hope for a bargain pick.

This season, Maatta has yet to really produce, only picking up 2 goals and 2 assists in the first 18 games of the season, hardly where some projections had him at this season.  After Wednesday night, he ranked 395th overall in pool scoring.

It hasn't been a great stretch for Dale C. in the pool, as injuries are starting to mount on his side, with still a couple weeks before the Waiver Draft.  Maatta has been one of the bigger disappointments of his draft, taking him in the 9th round and he isn't getting pool worthy production out of him, making him a candidate for a drop at the Waiver Draft.
