The New York Rangers indeed made a splash in the buyout pool, as they obviously couldn't find a deal to move forward Brad Richards through the trade market, they have decided to buy him out through the compliance process.
Richards, who had a no-movement clause on his extra-large deal, decided for the option of avoiding the waiver process, which made his buyout immediate. The buyout will see him earn $20.6 million over the next 12 seasons, as he had six years left on his deal.
In all 82 games with the Rangers in the 2014 regular season, Richards scored 20 goals and added 31 assists for 45 points, which ranked him 101st overall in pool scoring. For an annual cap hit of $6.5 million, the team were likely expecting a bit more out of him and with budgetary problems looming for the Rangers, he was definitely a candidate to be moved.
The Pool Outlook for the Rangers is coming up here pretty quick, so we'll have the cap numbers for the team attached to that, just so we're not doubling up work on it.
