The Philadelphia Flyers didn't let defenseman Kimmo Timonen head to unrestricted free agency, signing him to a new 1-year deal for the 2015 season, which could be worth upwards of $4 million, due to bonuses.
The 39-year old Finn had an okay year with the Flyers in 2014, finishing 36th among all defensemen in scoring with 6 goals and 29 assists in 77 games.
Timonen still has plenty of hockey pool value left in him, although it is dropping somewhat. I don't think there is any reason why you wouldn't pick Timonen for your pool team, as he will still help the team's power play and manage to manufacture some points in other ways. He played in 77 games last season, which suggests his durability is still above par for the most part. He isn't relied upon to be the number one guy in Philadelphia, so that has to help as well.
The signing may complicate the Flyers' salary cap picture, because I now have the team in with 17 players, meaning there are six roster spots left, with only $7.2 million left in cap space. This either means the Flyers will only be looking for some cheap help for next season or there are going to be some bodies shipped out to make space for a splash in the free agent pool. There is speculation that Vincent Lecavalier ($4.5 million) may be the odd-man out, offered to the highest (or the lowest, as the case may be) bidder.
