Only one player on the waiver wire on Wednesday, as the Detroit Red Wings look to clear Jordin Tootoo off their books, placing him on unconditional waivers in order to buy him out.
Tootoo, 31, has one more year on his current deal, which carries a cap hit of $1.9 million. In the 2014 season, Tootoo didn't really figure in at all to the Red Wings' plans, playing in 11 games and adding 1 assist. It is expected that the Red Wings will use a compliant buyout on Tootoo, so he doesn't affect the cap number over the next two seasons.
I did have Tootoo on my projected roster for the 2015 season, given that he has a 1-way deal and his contract would have cap implications, if he was buried in the minors. This buyout drops the projected roster down to 18 players, giving Detroit $21.1 million in cap space.
