Top Prospect Signings (Jul 21)
The Calgary Flames got the deal done with their top pick in the 2017 entry draft, defenseman Juuso Valimaki on Friday afternoon. The deal is now the 15th draft pick to put pen to paper on a 3-year entry-level deal and given that he's a 1st round pick, his salary will be at the maximum, $925,000, but bonuses won't nearly be as high as the top three picks.
Valimaki is considered to be more of an offensive defenseman, as he put up some great numbers with Tri-City in the WHL this past season, but there are a few questions about his overall mobility and hockey sense, but for how deep the Flames are on the blueline, there is certainly no rush to get him into their roster for a couple years, at least. Getting the deal done this early means he is under their umbrella and an entry-level slide will get them an extra year.
