Recent Contract Extensions (Sep 4)
On Tuesday morning, news dropped that the Winnipeg Jets signed forward Blake Wheeler to a brand new contract extension, saving the player and the team trouble of unrestricted free agency next summer. The deal was reported as a 5-year deal, worth $41.25 million, which works out to be an $8.25 million salary cap hit for each season.
The 32-year old forward ranked 12th in overall hockey pool scoring last season with 23 goals and 91 points in 81 games for the Jets last year and was definitely a big priority for the team to get locked down for the foreseeable future.
Winnipeg still has some work to do for the 2020 season, like re-signing Patrik Laine, Kyle Connor, Tyler Myers, Jacob Trouba and Josh Morrissey. Thankfully, they have done well with their cap management and they still have plenty of wiggle room to work with between now and then.
