Going into Wednesday night's game against the Islanders, the NHL-leading Anaheim Ducks got a pretty good scare, as they sent home both Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, because of the flu. Both players were not deemed fit to play and were told not to infect the rest of the squad on game day. The Ducks nearly picked up the win in the game, losing only 3-2 in overtime to the Islanders, but it would have been a much different game, if the team's top two players were on the ice.
This shouldn't be more than a one game sort of thing for the Ducks or for our poolies, Cam and Dale C., respectively. Both teams have had good starts to the season, thanks to their top Ducks, and this should only act as a hiccup for the 7th and 3rd placed teams in the pool.
The Detroit Red Wings suffered a pair of losses on Wednesday night, as they lost in overtime to the New York Rangers, 3-2, and on the final play of the game, where Derrick Brassard tapped in the winning goal, Detroit goalie Jonas Gustavsson suffered an upper-body injury trying to scramble across the crease and cover the loose puck, failing to do so and getting hurt at the same time. All the Red Wings have said is that the injury was suffered and that they expect to call-up Petr Mrazek on Thursday, that's about it. If the injury is more serious then that, we'll likely have an update on the blog for him.
Tony hasn't seen a great deal of production from Gustavsson yet this season, only 4 points through Wednesday night's game, but he still stands in the thick of it all, down in 10th place with 98 points, only 12 points out of the money. Only a couple points would bump him up to 6th place, so you can tell how close the race is. Tony is certainly hoping for a speedy recovery.
