Caps Place Carlson on LTIR

Well, further to the injury news that was presented earlier this morning, the Washington Capitals announced that defenseman John Carlson underwent "a procedure" on Saturday morning and that they expect him to be out of the lineup for 3-to-4 weeks, placing him on the Long Term Injury Reserve.  The placement on the LTIR will cost him at least ten games, including the game that he missed on Friday night.

Carlson's placement on the LTIR will do a couple things for the Capitals, who are comfortably in a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference: it will rest their number one defenseman for a long playoff spot and it will open up a bunch of cap space for the trade deadline, as they look to be buyers this weekend.

Carlson's numbers have been been good this season, when he has been in the lineup, as mentioned this morning, 6 goals and 31 points in 47 games, but with only about 5+ weeks left to play, that's about where he'll finish up his season, give or take a few more points.

More bad news for Troy, who is already without Brandon Sutter in Vancouver for the rest of the season, his injury situation will make his team very vulnerable to dropping further and further in the standings.  His team opened up Saturday's afternoon action in 17th place, still 9 points clear of 18th.
