The Florida Panthers are not taking any days off, as Sunday afternoon's news was that they signed forward Reilly Smith to a 5-year contract extension, starting in the 2018 season, worth a cool $25 million.
Smith's hockey pool stock has been on the rise, especially since his move to Florida from Boston, and his 2016 season was pretty exceptional. In 82 games, he finished with 25 goals and 50 points, ranking 113th overall in pool scoring, 83rd among all forwards.
With this contract extension, the Panthers have identified Smith as one of their core players moving forward, with Aleksander Barkov, Vincent Trocheck, Nick Bjugstad, Aaron Ekblad, Keith Yandle and the goaltending tandem of Roberto Luongo & James Reimer.
