On Tuesday morning, the Carolina Hurricanes announced that they had re-signed forward Victor Rask to a new long-term deal, 6 years, $24 million.
The Hurricanes were far from being one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference in the 2016 season and the emergence of Rask had a good deal to do with that, as a blossoming scorer in the league. The 23-year old Swede finished the year with 21 goals and 48 points in 80 games for the club and if the team can build well around him, he could certainly build on those numbers from season to season.
That improvement to the team does seem to be coming around at a pretty good pace, especially with the acquisition of Teuvo Teravainen from the Blackhawks, the signing of Lee Stempniak in free agency and finally getting to add draft pick Sebastian Aho to the mix. The Hurricanes could definitely find themselves back in the playoff conversation, after finishing 10 points out of the wild card with one of the best young bluelines and a decent goaltending tandem at the back. We should all expect better things from Rask and the Hurricanes, which would have me bump his projections up to about 55 points for next season.
This signing means that the Carolina Hurricanes are now above the salary cap floor with their projected 23-man lineup, which is in colour below. Thanks to their $5.83 million in buyouts that they have on the books this season, they are now about $16.5 million away from the salary cap ceiling, still keeping them in 'budget team' status.
