On Friday afternoon, the San Jose Sharks came to terms with restricted free agent Matt Nieto, signing him to a 1-year, $735,000 deal. It is a one-way deal, which suggests that Nieto should have a roster spot prepared for him, but there are certainly no guarantees in there for anyone.
The 23-year old forward appeared in 67 games for the Sharks last season, scoring 8 goals and 17 assists for the club, a scoring rate that may need a slight kick in the pants to be pool worthy, but he's moving in the right direction for it.
The Sharks are operating up tight to the salary cap ceiling, so it will be players like Nieto who will need to provide more value than their cap hit suggests for this team to really succeed this coming year.
