On Monday morning, news dropped out of Washington that the Capitals have re-signed forward Mike Knuble to a new 1-year contract extension, reported to be worth $2 million. Knuble was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, likely one of the more sought after free agents in a limited talent pool this season.
Knuble finished with only 40 points (24 goals and 16 assists) in 70 games in the 2011 season, numbers that are down slightly from some of his recent seasons, but I would imagine that some of that has to do with the new style of play in Washington and possibly some aging, as he will enter the 2012 season at 39 years of age.
The Capitals are in reasonable shape against the cap for the 2012 season, as they currently have 17 players signed (9 forwards, 7 defensemen and a goalie) for next season at an annual cap figure of $50.4 million, as of right now. Of course, more of their cap situation will be looked at when the team is eliminated (or wins the Cup) from the playoffs. It looks like a very good deal for Knuble, who will likely finish his career with the Capitals, by the look of things.
