It was announced on Friday that the Maple Leafs have signed Tyler Bozak out of the University of Denver. Bozak is considered to be the blue-chip, can't miss prospect coming into free agency after the NCAA season. This comes only days after the Leafs signed another top NCAA free agent prospect, Christian Hanson.
Bozak is claimed to have NHL size and pedigree at the tender age of 23 and the Leafs believe he is going to fit right into the system without any minors experience. If that is the case, then the Leafs have hit the jackpot with this signing, which could be considered a coup for Brian Burke.
I don't have any ill wishes for Bozak or Hanson, as they will hopefully have good NHL careers, but the hype machine in the NHL has not been terribly kind to some players of late. Fabian Brunnstrom does come to mind, as he's only got 24 points this season with the Stars and has been a healthy scratch on numerous occasions. The Leafs have appeared to have done well, which is good for the city of Toronto and their hockey culture, but at the end of the day, the proof is in the pudding.
