It has been a long off-season it seems, but with the calendar switching over to September, we may see a kick in pool-worthy news on the blog.
On Tuesday (Sep. 2), the Winnipeg Jets put pen to paper with the number nine overall pick, Nikolaj Ehlers. Ehlers, a Danish-born winger, had a monster year with Halifax in the QMJHL and the Jets will be hoping that he brings his dynamic scoring to the club, which desperately needs some more goals. It appears that Ehlers should be getting the full rookie salary ($925,000), assuming he makes the club right out of the gates. It is hard to say, right now, where he fits in the grand scheme of things, but given the lack of established scoring up front for Winnipeg, he may just get a long look.
The St. Louis Blues got in on the act as well on Tuesday, signing the 21st overall pick, Robby Fabbri to his 3-year entry-level deal, likely worth in the same neighbourhood of all of his 1st round counterparts. Fabbri is a speedy winger with some shifty moves and reasonably good hands, which should make for a good fit with the Blues and with a few roster spots open on my projected roster for St. Louis, there might be an outside chance that the gets a full-time shot, if not just topping out at a short stay through the preseason. Fabbri was hurt at this Summer's World Junior camp for Canada, but appears to be good for training camp in a couple of weeks.
