Last Night's Preseason Performers (Sep 23)

The New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators enjoyed some split squad action early on Monday, starting in the early afternoon in Newfoundland.  The two teams played a couple games at the Mile One Centre in St. John's, with the Islanders taking both games by the same score, 3-2... although the second game ended in a shootout.

In the early game, it was the Islanders' Brock Nelson who came out on top for the blog, picking up a goal and an assist, being the only one in the game picking up multiple points.

In the afternoon tilt, Mikhail Grabovski, an off-season signing for the Islanders, also picked up a goal and an assist for a mention in this post.

The Philadelphia Flyers sent a couple of split squads out into the wild on Monday and the first one took on the Capitals at home in the Wells Fargo Center, coming away with a 5-4 win.

For the losing side, the Capitals saw both Troy Brouwer and Eric Fehr picking up a goal and an assist.

On the winning side, defenseman Mark Streit had the best outing to date, scoring a goal and adding a trio of assists for a 4-point night.  Jakub Voracek wasn't too too far behind with a goal and 2 assists, while Blair Jones had a couple of assists and Andrew Gordon went one and one.

At MSG, the Devils came through the turnpike to take on the Rangers and came away victorious.

Michael Ryder was the big Devils player, scoring 2 goals and an assist to lead the way, while Adam Henrique, Eric Gelinas and Reid Boucher each had a goal and an assist each.

One notable player on the home side, J.T. Miller had a pair of assists.

In the second game for the Philadelphia Flyers on the night, they blew a 2nd period 2-0 lead to the Toronto Maple Leafs and lost the game, 3-2 in the shootout.  The game was in London, Ontario and the hometown Leafs didn't disappoint in the end, thanks to a goal and an assist from Nazem Kadri.

Prospect forward Nick Cousins had a pair of assists for the Flyers, earning a nod on the blog this morning.

The Detroit Red Wings opened their preseason with a 2-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins in the steel city and it was Pavel Datsyuk who led the way, picking up a goal and an assist of his own.  Datsyuk's night didn't last too long, leaving the game with an injury, which we'll have a look at shortly.

Andrew Ladd opened his preseason account with a couple of assists in Winnipeg's preseason opener, home to the Minnesota Wild, in a 2-1 win.  The Jets will be leaning heavily on their captain this year, as they try and make it into the playoffs for the first time, since their arrival in Manitoba.

In Dallas, there were a few more goals than a few of these games, with the Stars defeating the visiting Blues, 4-3.  Unfortunately, for this post's purposes, there were not very many multiple-point players in the game, as St. Louis' Patrik Berglund had a goal and an assist in the loss.

Two powerhouse Western Conference teams in the 2014 season opened up their preseason schedules with split squad games in each other's buildings and it was the Anaheim Ducks who were flexing their muscle on Monday night, winning both games, 5-2 in Denver and 4-0 at home.

On the road, the Ducks were led by Brad Winchester, who scored a pair of goals, while former Habs prospect Louis Leblanc had a pair of assists.  For the losing side, Andrew Agozzino had a pair of assists on the only two goals the Avs would score on the night.

Back at the pond, Fredrik Andersen put a stamp on his passport to the number one job with a 27-save shutout in a full game's worth of action.  Defenseman Ben Lovejoy had a goal and an assist in the home game, while Ryan Getzlaf also had his name added, picking up a pair of assists.

Finally, there was an all-Pacific Division split squad outing as well, as the Arizona Coyotes and Los Angeles Kings went head-to-head.  In this match-up, both games went to the shootout and in each result, the home team came away victorious.

In Glendale, it was a 5-4 win for the Coyotes and it was a big night for a trio, as Martin Hanzal and rookies Henrik Samuelsson & Max Domi all had 3 points.  Hanzal had a pair of goals, while Samuelsson had a goal as well, while Domi had all helpers.  Coyotes number one Mike Smith made 29 saves for the win.  On the losing side, Tanner Pearson kept it close with 3 points as well, while Mike Richards, Tyler Toffoli and Jeff Carter all had 2 points.

At the Staples Center, the Kings took their home game, 4-3 in the skills competition, and it was Marian Gaborik leading the way with a pair of goals.  Anze Kopitar wasn't going to be left behind, picking up a pair of assists as well.  For Arizona, a couple rookies made the blog, as Justin Hodgman had a goal and an assist in LA and Lucas Lessio had a pair of assists to help his cause for a roster spot as well.
