Of course, as it so happens, as soon as I hit the Publish button on my post this morning, the Philadelphia Flyers drop an update on Steve Mason's status, regarding his lower-body injury.
The team is expecting their number one goalie to miss the next 2-to-3 weeks with his lower-body injury, which has been suggested to be a knee injury, which he needs minor arthroscopic surgery to help it along. The team is not going to confirm anything, but that's just what I had read, in terms of speculation.
Despite being the number one goalie in Philadelphia, Mason has not put up the numbers that you may have come to expect from that position, as he has only picked up 28 points in 34 appearances this season. Mason has 11 wins, 2 shutouts and 2 assists this season and ranks 181st in pool scoring, after Monday night.
Mason was the 2nd round pick for Allan this year, taken 28th overall, which gives you the sort of expectation he had on him this year. Surely, at the time, it didn't seem like a terrible place to pick Mason, even knowing his injury prone status. He isn't the worst pick in the round, remarkably, but he is far from being close to at least reasonable there. Five players in the round have already done more than double than Mason in this season's scoring.
Ray Emery, the Week Eighteen pick-up for Tony, will be a clutch pick-up, as long as the team in front of him plays well. There are certainly no guarantees of that this season, are there?
