There was a fair amount of chatter out in the public domain about Andrew Shaw being a potential piece to move for the Blackhawks this Summer, as they try and retool underneath a salary cap ceiling that didn't see very much of a raise this year.
Once the Canadiens were able to move some salary out, see the previous deal with Lars Eller heading to Washington, the Habs all kinds of bargaining power with the future restricted free agent, looking to give him a deal, worthy of his potential contributions to the team moving forward.
The addition of Shaw, once signed, should give the Canadiens another player that does a decent job of combining skill and grit, being a difficult player to play against. I think given the make-up of the Canadiens before his acquisition, I think the team will be able to find some quality minutes for him and his responsibility will grow and his production should grow with it.
The 24-year old is coming off of a deal that had a $2 million cap hit and I would imagine that his cap hit moving forward will hover around the $3.5 million range, given his experience and championship ring, not to mention the team's commitment to bringing him into the fold.
