On Wednesday, the buyout period opened up and will run until the end of the month and teams will be able to clean up some of their poor contracts up for a cost, of course. The Maple Leafs were quick on the draw, placing defenseman Jared Cowen (and his $3.1 million cap hit) on waivers yesterday, solely for the purpose of buying him out today. With the way the math works out, Cowen will be a credit this season, but a minor hit in the 2018 season.
Cowen had a lot of upside when he came into the league with Ottawa, but his potential wasn't realized and a big contract made him a difficult player to have around on a daily basis. It will be interesting to see if he can land a job elsewhere and possibly become a fringe defenseman for us poolies.
